A pump, a lantern and a fire-starter, at 102 grams.

The Wind Mini is the size of a small jar and does the three jobs that eat time and space in a pack. It inflates a sleeping mat in a minute or two instead of leaving you light-headed, empties it again for packing, hangs in the tent as a lamp, and blows a steady stream of air at a struggling fire.

Inflation runs at 4.5 kPa and 180 litres a minute. Deflation is slightly stronger at 5 kPa, which is what actually gets a mat flat enough to roll properly. Both directions use the same body, with nozzles for the common valve types.

The lamp has three levels, 60, 160 and 300 lumens, and the lowest is the one you will use most: at 60 lumens it runs about fourteen hours, enough for several nights of reading and moving around the tent.

This is a low-pressure pump. It is made for mats, pillows, air pouches and pool toys. It will not inflate a paddleboard or a kayak.

A note on runtime: the pump gives about 25 minutes of continuous running per charge. That is many mats, but it is a small battery doing a motor’s job, so charge it before a trip rather than during one.

Good to know

Will it inflate a paddleboard?

No. It runs at 4.5 kPa, which is about 0.65 PSI, and a paddleboard needs 12 to 15 PSI. This is a volume pump for sleeping mats, pillows, air pouches and pool toys. For a board you need a proper high-pressure hand pump.

How long does a sleeping mat take?

A minute or two for a standard single mat. The real gain is not the speed, it is that you are not blowing into a valve for five minutes and getting dizzy, and that moisture from your breath never gets inside the mat.

Is the deflate function worth having?

More than most people expect. Rolling a mat flat by hand always leaves air trapped in the foam, and the mat ends up a size too big for its bag. Pulling a vacuum on it at 5 kPa is what gets it back to the packed size it had when new.

How bright is 300 lumens really?

Bright enough to light a two-person tent properly, and too bright to sit next to. The 60-lumen setting is the useful one for inside a tent at night, and it is also the one that runs about fourteen hours.

How does the fire-starting work?

You point it at the embers on the low setting. It does the job of kneeling down and blowing, without the kneeling or the smoke in your face. It is genuinely useful with damp wood, which is most of the wood along the coast.

How long does a charge last?

About 25 minutes of continuous pumping, which covers several mats. Lighting is far less demanding. Charge it fully before a trip; with a 1600 mAh battery there is no topping it up from nothing in the field unless you carry a power bank.

How do I look after it?

Keep sand out of the ports, which at the coast is the whole battle. Let a mat dry before you deflate it, so you are not pulling moisture through the motor. Charge it every couple of months if it is sitting unused, because a lithium battery left flat for a long time loses capacity.
