Product description

About this product

The P20i UV is a full tactical light with an ultraviolet head built alongside the white one. The white channel uses a Luminus SST-40-W LED for 1,800 lumens and a 337-metre throw. The UV channel uses four dedicated LEDs at 365 nanometres and 320 milliwatts, which is the wavelength that lifts security threads on banknotes, fluorescent inks on ID documents, and organic stains that a 395 nm blacklight shows only faintly.

Two tail switches run it, with tactical and daily modes and STROBE READY for instant strobe. A NITECORE NL2140i 21700 cell of 4,000 mAh is supplied and charges in the light over USB-C, and the power indicator can display battery voltage to a tenth of a volt. The strike bezel is silicon nitride ceramic.

Questions

Good to know

Why 365 nm rather than the usual 395 nm?

365 nm is proper ultraviolet and barely visible to the eye, so what you see fluorescing is the mark itself, not violet light bouncing off everything. Cheap 395 nm blacklights wash a note in purple; this one makes the security thread stand out.

Will it check Tanzanian shilling notes?

Yes. The security features in modern shilling notes fluoresce under 365 nm, as do most foreign notes, driving licences and ID cards. It is the practical reason a lot of businesses buy this particular light.

Is the UV safe?

Do not look into it, do not shine it at anyone's eyes or skin for long, and keep it away from children. Short, aimed use at a document is fine; sustained exposure is not.

Can I run it on CR123 batteries?

Yes, two of them, using the supplied magazine. That is the backup for when the 21700 is flat.

What is STROBE READY?

A press-and-hold on the tail switch that goes straight to strobe from off, without cycling modes. It is a tactical feature, and it is also how you avoid hunting for a mode in an emergency.

How does it cope with the coast?

Hard-anodised aluminium, IP68 to 2 metres. Rinse the salt off, dry it and keep the charge port sealed. The ceramic bezel does not corrode.

Will the UV show stains on fabric?

Yes, and more clearly than a 395 nm torch. Hotel and guesthouse managers use exactly this to check linen.
