Fifteen litres is a deliberately small pack, and the discipline is part of the appeal. It takes water, a rain shell, snacks, a camera and a first aid kit – and then it is full, which stops you filling a bigger bag with things you will carry all day and never touch.
Two features do the useful work. The first is hydration compatibility: a dedicated opening for a bladder tube, so you drink while walking rather than stopping, getting a bottle out and starting again. In Tanzanian heat, on a climb or a long walk, that single change is what keeps people properly hydrated.
The second is the whistle built into the pack. It is a small thing that costs nothing to carry and matters enormously on the one day it is needed – a whistle carries far further than a shout, for far longer, and it is the standard way of signalling if you are lost or hurt.
