You sit up on a bench facing the water rather than lying back in a cockpit, there is a floor to put a cool box on, high sides to keep spray off your tackle, and rod holders moulded into the tubes so nothing has to be held.
The Voyager X3 is 294 cm long and 137 cm wide – broad enough to move about in – and rated to 360 kg, which covers three adults with gear. It is rowed with a pair of 145 cm three-piece oars through integrated oarlocks and clamps, which is slower than paddling but much less tiring over a few hours and far easier to learn.
The hull is Bestway’s Inflata-Shield fabric across three separate air chambers, with an inflatable floor and inflatable seat cushions. A wraparound grab rope runs the whole way round, which gives you something to hold when getting back in from the water and something to tie off at a jetty.
It suits the creeks and bays around Dar es Salaam, the Rufiji delta, sheltered water off Bagamoyo and Kigamboni, and the lakes. Wear buoyancy aids, stay inside the reef, and treat offshore wind as the main hazard – it moves a light inflatable faster than you can row against it.
