Speed goggles are a different shape from comfort goggles. The frame is smaller and sits closer to the face, with the seal taken more by the eye socket than by a thick gasket. That gives less water resistance and a cleaner line off a turn, which is why competitive swimmers use them – and it means the fit has to be right, because there is less soft material to forgive a mismatch.
The test is simple. Press the goggles onto your eye sockets without using the strap. If they hold by suction alone for a second or two, the shape suits your face. If they fall off, no amount of strap tension will keep them sealed.
These use anti-fog coated lenses with a silicone gasket and strap. Silicone is the material that decides how long goggles last: it stays soft for years, where cheap rubber goes hard in chlorine within a season and leaks regardless of adjustment.
They come with a hard plastic case, which is worth more than it sounds. Goggles left loose in a swim bag get scratched lenses within weeks, and a scratched lens cannot be fixed.
Never wipe the inside of the lens. The anti-fog coating is microscopically thin and a finger or a towel takes it off for good.
