Highlights

Grips, so your hands relax

Gripping the edge of a plain board tenses the arms and shoulders, which is exactly what you do not want while training your legs. Moulded grips let the hands relax.

Moulded hand grips

A secure hold without clamping the edge, so the arms and shoulders stay relaxed.

Buoyant foam

Enough flotation to support the upper body through a long kick set.

Leg training

Isolates the kick so all the work comes from the legs.

Adults and children

Usable by anyone working on kick technique, with supervision for children.

Product description

About this product

A plain kickboard is held by gripping its edge, and over a long kick set that tenses the hands, forearms and shoulders – which is the opposite of what you want while the point of the exercise is the legs. Moulded hand grips solve it. The hands sit in shaped recesses and hold securely without clamping, so the upper body can stay relaxed.

The board itself does the standard kickboard job: it floats your arms so every metre comes from the legs. That builds kick strength, which matters far more in open water and chop than it does in a calm pool lane, and it exposes a weak or inefficient kick immediately.

Kick technique in short: from the hip rather than the knee, legs long, kick small and fast, toes pointed. A big bent-knee kick moves a lot of water and almost no swimmer, and it is the commonest fault there is.

Rinse the board in fresh water after every session and keep it out of direct sun. Chlorine and UV together are what make closed-cell foam go chalky and crumble at the edges.

Questions

Good to know

Why hand grips rather than a plain board?

Because gripping a plain edge tenses the hands, forearms and shoulders through a long kick set, which is exactly what you do not want while training the legs. Moulded grips hold securely with the hands relaxed.

What is a kickboard for?

Isolating the legs. Your arms rest on the board so all the propulsion comes from the kick - which builds kick strength and shows you how much your legs are really contributing.

How do I use a kickboard properly?

Hold the near edge, arms extended, face in or out of the water as you prefer, and kick from the hip rather than the knee. Keep the legs long and the kick small and fast - a big bent-knee kick moves a lot of water and very little swimmer.

Kickboard or pull buoy?

Opposite jobs. The board floats the arms to train the legs; a pull buoy floats the legs to train the arms. Most structured sessions use both.

Can a child use it?

Yes, with supervision and within their depth. It is a training aid, not a buoyancy aid, and must never be relied on as flotation.

Which board should I buy, this or the square one?

This one if you do long kick sets and want the hands relaxed. The plain 42 x 27 cm square board is slightly more stable and simpler. Both do the same job.

Is it suitable for aqua aerobics?

It works well for water exercise generally - kick work, resistance drills and supported movement. It is not a substitute for proper flotation for a non-swimmer.

How do I look after foam training aids?

Rinse in fresh water after every session and dry in the shade. Chlorine and UV both break down closed-cell foam - a board left on a sunny poolside all summer goes chalky and crumbles at the edges.
