Highlights

Built for a short swing

Light and head-heavy - the racket does the work.

254 g and head-heavy

Hammer weighting puts mass in the head so a short compact swing still produces pace.

Extended 27.5 in

Extra leverage on top of the head-heavy balance. This racket is all about free power.

PWS at 3 and 9

Perimeter weighting for torsional stability, so off-centre hits twist the frame less.

Know who it suits

A player with a short swing. A full swinger will find it uncontrollable.

Product description

About this product

Wilson Hyper Hammer – in stock at 361 Degrees Adventure in Dar es Salaam.

The Hyper Hammer 5.3 is a 1999-heritage design still in production, and it does one thing very deliberately.

It is extremely light – 254 g strung – and unusually head-heavy at 11 points. Wilson call it Hammer Technology, and the idea is simple: put the mass in the head rather than the handle so that even a short, compact swing carries real momentum into the ball. Add an extended 27.5 inch length for extra leverage and the result is a racket that produces pace for a player who cannot produce it themselves.

That is a genuinely useful thing, and it is also why this is not a racket for everyone. A player with a full modern swing will find a light head-heavy frame hard to control and harsh to hit with. It is aimed at older players, social doubles players, anyone coming back after years off, and anyone whose strokes are compact by choice or necessity.

PWS – Wilson’s Perimeter Weighting System at three and nine o’clock – adds torsional stability, so an off-centre hit twists the frame less than the light weight would otherwise allow. The frame is a graphite composite with Hyper Carbon content, pre-strung, 16 by 20.

Two honest notes. Wilson’s own site lists the head size as 115 square inches while specialist retailers consistently say 110; we are quoting Wilson but flagging the discrepancy, and if the exact figure matters, ask us and we will read it off the frame. And the code WRT5781 that appears on some listings is not Wilson’s – theirs is WRT5861, article WRT58610U.

Questions

Good to know

What does head size change?

How much the racket helps you against how much control you have. A bigger head means more power and a bigger sweet spot that punishes mishits less - which is why beginners should start oversize. A smaller head means more control and more feedback, which is what a player with a full swing needs to keep the ball in. Under 100 square inches is control; 105 to 110 is forgiving; above 110 is maximum help.

Who is this racket for?

A player with a short, compact swing who needs the racket to supply pace - older players, social doubles players, anyone returning after years off. A player with a full modern swing will find a light head-heavy frame hard to control.

What does head-heavy actually do?

It puts mass where the ball is struck rather than in your hand, so momentum at impact is higher for the same swing speed. You get free power. The cost is a racket that is slower to manoeuvre and less precise.

Is the head 110 or 115 square inches?

Wilson's own site says 115; specialist retailers consistently say 110. We quote Wilson and flag the difference rather than pick one silently. Ask us and we will read the figure off the frame in stock.

When do strings need replacing?

Long before they break. Strings lose tension and elasticity from the day they go in - the stringbed goes dead while looking perfect. The old rule still holds: restring as many times a year as you play per week. Twice a week, twice a year. At minimum once a year regardless, and sooner here, because heat accelerates tension loss badly.

What does string gauge mean?

How thick the string is. It is quoted in millimetres and in a US gauge number where higher means thinner - 1.20 mm is 17 gauge, 1.30 mm is 16. Thinner bites the ball more for extra spin and feel, and breaks sooner. Thicker lasts considerably longer and feels firmer and more controlled, with less spin. 1.25 mm is the sensible middle.

How does the climate here affect equipment?

Heat is hard on strings - polyester loses tension fastest of all string types and heat accelerates it sharply, so expect to restring more often than a European schedule suggests. Never leave a racket in a car boot. Humidity is hard on grips and on natural gut, which absorbs moisture and softens. And pressurised balls go dead faster in heat, opened or not.
