The problem a dummy solves is simple. Practising free kicks against an empty goal teaches you to strike a ball; practising against a wall teaches you to get it over and round something, which is the actual skill. Two or three dummies together make a proper wall and change the drill entirely, because a single dummy can be beaten round the outside in a way a real wall cannot.
