Highlights

A training goal, sized sensibly

240 by 150 cm - small-sided games and shooting practice.

240 x 150 cm

A training goal. Small-sided games, shooting drills and back-garden football - not a match goal.

Portable

It goes to wherever there is flat ground, which in Tanzania is most of the value.

Small-sided is better coaching

More touches per player per session than eleven-a-side. That is why coaches use it.

Peg it down

A light goal in wind or a hard shot moves. On grass use pegs; on concrete, weight the base.

Product description

About this product

A portable soccer goal measuring 240 by 150 cm.

It is worth being clear about what this size is for. A full-size goal under Law 1 is 7.32 by 2.44 m, and this is considerably smaller – which makes it a training goal rather than a match one. That is not a limitation, it is the point: small-sided football is better coaching than eleven-a-side for almost everybody, because every player gets several times as many touches in the same session, and a pair of small goals is what makes small-sided games possible on any flat piece of ground.

Portability is most of the value here, given how football actually happens in Tanzania. A goal that can be carried to a compound, a school yard, a stretch of beach or a cleared patch of ground gets used; a fixed goal gets used only where it stands.

One practical point: peg it down. A light portable goal moves in wind and moves when a hard shot hits the frame, and a goal that shifts between shots is frustrating and can tip. On grass use pegs; on concrete or a hard court, weight the base with sandbags.

And bring it in, or at least bring the net in, when it is not being used. UV is what finishes portable goals in this climate – the net goes brittle first and the frame’s fittings corrode second.

Questions

Good to know

What size is a full-size goal?

7.32 m wide by 2.44 m high - eight yards by eight feet - measured between the inside of the posts and from the ground to the underside of the crossbar. That is the Law 1 figure and it has not changed in well over a century.

How do I stop a net sagging?

Tension it evenly along the top first, then peg the bottom out behind the goal line rather than pulling it tight to the crossbar. A net pegged too close to the goal line sends the ball straight back out and looks wrong; pegged too loose it drags on the ground and tears.

What is the number one thing that destroys nets here?

UV, not football. Sustained tropical sun breaks down polypropylene faster than any amount of shooting practice. A net left up permanently in this climate will go brittle and start failing in the second season. Take it down between uses if you can, or accept a shorter life and budget for it.

What does the twine thickness mean?

How thick each strand of the net is, in millimetres. Thicker twine is stronger and lasts longer, and it also looks heavier and sits differently. 2.5 mm is a light club net, 3 mm and above is a heavy-duty one. 2.8 mm sits in between - solid for club and school use.

How do I repair a hole?

Small holes are worth fixing rather than replacing the net. Use a length of the same twine or strong nylon cord and tie off each broken strand to its neighbours, matching the mesh pattern. Do it as soon as you notice it - a small hole in a net grows quickly.

How does the climate here affect equipment?

Heat raises the pressure inside an inflated ball, so a ball pumped in the cool morning and left on a sunlit pitch is harder by the afternoon - inflate toward the lower end of the range. UV degrades stitching, PU covers and net twine, so keep balls and nets out of prolonged direct sun when they are not in use. And dry kit properly rather than sealing it damp in a bag.

Can I leave a goal outside?

A steel or aluminium goal frame can live outdoors, but it will corrode faster here than inland, particularly near the coast - check the fixings and the welds each season. The net is the part that really suffers; take that in.
