Highlights

Compulsory, and commonly wrong

Under the sock, both shins, and sized by height.

Compulsory under Law 4

Both shins, and covered by the socks. A guard worn outside the sock is not legal.

Size by height, not age

A tall eleven-year-old and a short fifteen-year-old need the same guard. Measure it.

Measure and subtract 5 cm

Below the knee to the boot top, less 5 cm. That is the length that fits without digging in.

Check the width too

It should cover the full width of the shin bone and wrap slightly. Narrow guards leave the edges exposed.

Product description

About this product

Soccer Shin Guards – in stock at 361 Degrees Adventure in Dar es Salaam.

Shin guards, which are compulsory equipment under Law 4 – and one of the most commonly mis-bought items in football.

The Law itself asks for very little: guards made of a suitable material to provide reasonable protection, and covered by the socks. That is the whole requirement – there is no specified size, thickness or standard. Two things follow that people get wrong constantly. A guard worn outside the sock is not legal and referees do check. And you need two – one guard is not compliance.

Sizing is where most purchases go wrong, because people buy by age or shoe size. Guards are sized by height. Measure from just below the knee to the top of the boot, then take about 5 cm off that figure – the guard should sit two to five centimetres below the knee and reach just above the ankle, so it does not dig into the knee when the leg bends or jam into the ankle when sprinting.

Check the width as well as the length, because this is where cheap guards fail. The guard should cover the full width of the shin bone and wrap slightly around it. A guard that is too narrow leaves the edges of the tibia exposed, which is where a stud actually lands.

On type: slip-in guards are lighter and are what most senior players prefer, but they need a sleeve or tape to stay put. Ankle-guard versions with padded wings and a stirrup are the sensible choice for juniors and defenders, and some youth competitions require them.

Air them after every match. Foam sealed damp in a kit bag in this humidity turns unpleasant within days.

Questions

Good to know

Are shin guards actually compulsory?

Yes. Under Law 4 they are basic compulsory equipment, and the Law requires two things: that they are made of a suitable material to provide reasonable protection, and that they are covered by the socks. A guard worn outside the sock is not legal, and referees do check. Both shins, incidentally - one guard is not compliance.

How do I size them?

Measure from just below the knee to the top of the boot, then subtract about 5 cm. That gives a guard that protects the shin without digging into the knee when the leg bends or jamming into the ankle when sprinting. It should sit 2 to 5 cm below the knee and reach just above the ankle.

Does the Law specify a size or a standard?

No, and that surprises people. Law 4 requires only suitable material and reasonable protection, covered by the socks. Competition rules can go further - some youth and school competitions require a recognised protective standard or ankle protection - so check what your league asks for.

Slip-in or with ankle guards?

Slip-in guards are lighter and lower profile, which is why most senior players prefer them, but they need a sleeve or tape to stay put. Ankle-guard versions have padded wings and a stirrup under the foot, and they are the sensible choice for juniors and for defenders. Some youth competitions require them.

What size for a child?

Size guards by height, not by age or shoe size - a tall eleven-year-old and a short fifteen-year-old need the same guard. As a rough guide: under 130 cm extra small, 130 to 140 small, 140 to 160 medium, 160 to 175 large, above that extra large. Always measure rather than guess.

Do goalkeepers need them?

Yes. The Law makes no exception for goalkeepers.

How do I keep them from smelling?

Take them out of the bag after every match and let them air properly. Wipe the shells and hand wash the sleeves with mild soap regularly. Sweat-soaked foam sealed in a kit bag in Dar humidity turns unpleasant within days.
