About this product
Trolling and Rigging Hooks – in stock at 361 Degrees Adventure in Tanzania.
Rigging hooks are a specific tool. They are sewn or wired into a dead bait – a ballyhoo, a mackerel, a bonito strip – and the rig may be made up the night before a trip and kept on ice. A carbon steel hook in that environment starts to rust before it ever gets in the water, and a rusty hook is both weaker and blunter than it looks.
These are heat-hardened 420 stainless steel, which solves that. 420 is a hardenable stainless – it can be heat treated to a genuinely hard temper, which ordinary austenitic stainless cannot – so you get corrosion resistance without giving up strength.
The point is a cut edge, which is the traditional big-game geometry: rather than a cone, the point has sharpened edges that slice through a tough jaw instead of pushing their way in. It penetrates faster at the low hook-set speeds trolling produces, where the fish essentially hooks itself against the drag.
Sizes run 6/0 to 13/0, on wire from 2.6 mm to 4.9 mm, with gapes from 21.5 mm to 34.5 mm and heights from 2 to 3.5 inches. Sizes 6/0 to 12/0 come five to a pack; the 13/0 comes in pairs.
Off Dar es Salaam these belong in rigged trolling baits for wahoo, marlin, sailfish and yellowfin – the Mafia channel, the offshore banks and out towards Latham Island.
