About this product
Back Zipper Long Sleeve – in stock at 361 Degrees Adventure in Tanzania.
A 3 mm full-sleeve wetsuit is the standard suit for the Indian Ocean. The water here is warm – typically 26 to 29 degrees – which means nobody is putting one on to survive the cold. They are putting it on for three other reasons.
Time is the first. Water conducts heat away from the body about twenty-five times faster than air does, and warm water does it too, just more slowly. Ten minutes is nothing; an hour on a dive, or three dives in a day, and an unprotected diver gets cold and tired well before they expect to. 3 mm of neoprene changes that completely.
Skin is the second. Coral takes the skin off a forearm without you noticing until later, and a coral graze in this climate is slow to heal and prone to infection. Hydroids and small stingers on a wreck or a mooring line catch bare arms. And the sun on a back that is just under the surface for an hour will burn through water.
Buoyancy is the third, which matters if you dive: a 3 mm suit adds lift, so you will want a couple of kilos on the belt to compensate. That is normal and it is why weight belts and lead are sold alongside suits.
The suit is 90% SCR neoprene and 10% nylon with a back zip, which is the simplest closure and keeps the chest panel unbroken. The fit should be tight everywhere and free of folds – a wetsuit works by trapping a thin layer of water against the skin and letting your body warm it. A loose suit flushes with cold water every time you move and does nothing at all.

Spare parts and replacements for the back zipper long sleeve are easier to get here than on an overseas order, which matters once the gear is in use.
