About this product

A plastic triangle rack for standard 57.2 mm billiard and pool balls.

A rack is the cheapest part on a pool table and it decides how every single frame starts, which makes it worth more thought than it usually gets.

The mechanism is simple. When the cue ball strikes the pack, the energy transfers from ball to ball through the points where they touch. Every ball that is not in contact with its neighbours is a gap where that transfer stops – and a rack with two or three gaps in it produces a break that feels dead no matter how hard it is struck. Players almost always blame their technique for this. It is the rack.

So: match the rack to the balls, push the balls up into the apex so every one touches, and lift the triangle straight up rather than sliding it off – sliding drags the balls apart and undoes the work.

This one is sized for 57.2 mm American pool balls. Snooker balls at 52.5 mm and British pub pool balls at 50.8 mm need their own rack, and a rack that is even slightly oversized leaves the gaps described above.

Plastic rather than wood is a sensible choice in a humid climate: it will not warp, which a wooden rack in a coastal house can. Replace it when it cracks at a corner – once a rack no longer holds the balls tight, it is not doing its only job.

Good to know

Why does rack size matter?

Because the triangle has to fit the balls tightly enough that they touch each other. A rack that is too large leaves gaps, and a rack with gaps produces a loose break - the balls absorb the energy rather than spreading. A rack too small will not close at all.

Which rack fits my balls?

Match the rack to the ball size your table uses. American pool balls are 57.2 mm, British pub pool 50.8 mm and snooker 52.5 mm. If you are unsure, measure a ball and tell us - we will match the rack rather than have you guess.

How should I rack properly?

Position the triangle so the apex ball sits on the foot spot, push the balls up into the apex so every ball touches its neighbours, then lift the triangle straight up rather than sliding it. A tight rack is what makes a break spread; a loose one is why breaks feel dead.

PVC or wood?

PVC is lighter, cheaper and will not warp in humidity, which here is a genuine advantage. Wood looks better on a good table and feels more substantial, but it can move in damp conditions. Both rack balls identically when they fit.

Why does my break feel weak?

Nine times out of ten it is the rack rather than the break. If the balls are not touching each other when the triangle comes off, the energy stops at the first gap. Push the balls up into the apex before you lift.

Does a rack wear out?

Plastic racks crack eventually, usually at a corner, and once they do the balls will not sit tight. Wooden racks split along the grain. Either way a rack that no longer holds the balls in contact should be replaced - it is a cheap part that affects every frame.

What are the standard ball sizes?

Three sets in common use. American pool uses 57.2 mm (2.25 in) balls. British pub pool uses 50.8 mm (2 in). Snooker uses 52.5 mm. They are not interchangeable - the pockets, the rack and the table are all built around one size, and a set of the wrong balls will not rack or pot properly.
