Highlights

When a net is not an option

Past a certain size a fish will not go in a net, and hanging over the gunwale to grab it is how people go in the water. A gaff is the tool for that job.

120 cm

Enough reach to take a fish alongside the boat without leaning out over the side.

Fibreglass shaft

Strong, stiff and it does not corrode - the right material for a tool that lives in salt.

EVA grip

Non-slip even with wet, slimy hands, which is exactly when you are using it.

Deep-sea and trolling

Built for boating large game fish rather than for shore use.

Product description

About this product

Saltwater Boat Fishing Gaff – in stock at 361 Degrees Adventure in Tanzania.

There is a point at which a landing net stops being useful. A fish that is too heavy or too long for the net, alongside a moving boat, is a genuine problem – and reaching over the gunwale to grab it by hand is how people go over the side. A gaff is the tool for that moment.

This one is 120 cm, which gives enough reach to take a fish alongside without leaning out, while staying short enough to swing in a crowded cockpit. The shaft is fibreglass: stiff, strong, and unaffected by salt water, which is what rules out most alternatives on a boat.

The grip is EVA, which keeps its friction when wet and slimy – and your hands are always wet and slimy at the moment you pick up a gaff.

Two points on use. First, gaff the fish in the shoulder or the head, not the body, if you intend to keep it – a gaff through the flank ruins a lot of good meat. Second, a gaff is not for fish you intend to release. For those, use a lip grip, a net, or unhook the fish in the water alongside.

Keep the point covered when it is not in use. A loose gaff point in a cockpit with people moving around is a serious hazard.

Questions

Good to know

When should I use a gaff rather than a net?

When the fish is too large or too long for the net, and you intend to keep it. A gaff is a killing and boating tool - it is not for fish you plan to release.

Where do I gaff the fish?

In the shoulder or head if you are keeping it, which does least damage to the meat and gives the most secure hold. Never gaff a fish you intend to release.

Is 120 cm long enough?

For most boats with moderate freeboard, yes - it reaches a fish alongside without you leaning out. On a boat with a very high side, a longer gaff or a flying gaff is the right tool; ask us.

Why fibreglass rather than aluminium?

It is stiff, strong and completely unaffected by salt water. Aluminium corrodes at the fittings, and a gaff is a tool where a failure happens at the worst possible moment.

How do I store it safely?

With the point covered. A loose gaff point in a cockpit with people moving around is genuinely dangerous - use the guard it comes with, or a cork, and stow it in a rack.

Can I use it from shore?

It is designed for boat use. From rocks a long-handled gaff is sometimes used, but landing a fish over rocks in a surge is a different and more dangerous job - talk to us about what suits your spot.

What size fish is it for?

Large game fish - the ones a net will not take. For anything you can lift by hand or net, use those instead; a gaff on a small fish is unnecessary and messy.

How do I look after it?

Rinse in fresh water after every trip, dry it, and keep the point sharp and covered. A blunt gaff point skids off a fish instead of going in, which is when accidents happen.
