About this product

This is a mini air cylinder: half a litre of high-pressure air, a small regulator, and a full-face mask to breathe it through. It is genuinely useful for a narrow set of jobs – freeing a fouled propeller, checking an anchor or a mooring line, retrieving something dropped off a jetty, a quick look under a hull, or a brief shallow look at a reef from a boat.

What it is not is a substitute for a scuba set or for scuba training. A 0.5-litre cylinder holds around 100 litres of air at working pressure. Breathing calmly at the surface that is seven to ten minutes. At 10 metres each breath draws twice the air, so the same cylinder gives half the time; working hard or nervous, less again. There is no reserve, no gauge you should rely on, and no second stage if something fails.

The most important rule with any compressed-air breathing device is the one people who have not done a scuba course do not know: never hold your breath while ascending. Air taken in under pressure expands on the way up, and holding it in closed lungs can rupture lung tissue in as little as a couple of metres. Breathe out continuously as you come up, always. If you have not done a certified course, this is the single fact to take from this page.

Keep it shallow, keep it short, and never use it alone. Have someone at the surface who knows you are under and is watching. Do not use it for repeated dives in a session, do not use it to go deeper than a few metres, and do not use it after any dive on a full scuba set. If what you want is to spend real time underwater, do an Open Water course – there is good instruction available in Dar es Salaam and on Zanzibar – and use proper equipment.

Have the cylinder filled at a dive centre if you can. A hand pump will fill it, slowly, and a compressor at a dive shop will do it in moments with air that has been filtered for breathing. Never fill a breathing cylinder from a workshop or tyre compressor – that air carries oil and moisture that you should not be breathing.

How long does it actually last?

Roughly 7-10 minutes shallow and at rest. Deeper or working harder cuts that sharply, because each breath at depth uses more air - at 10 metres you use about twice as much per breath as at the surface. Treat the figure as a maximum, not a plan.

Why does the time say supplier figure?

Because the 7-10 minute number comes from the supplier-s specification rather than a measured test we can verify, and real time depends entirely on depth, exertion and the individual. We would rather mark it than present it as certain.

Do I need training to use it?

You need to understand one thing absolutely: never hold your breath while ascending, because compressed air expands on the way up and can injure your lungs. Beyond that, a certified Open Water course is strongly recommended for anyone planning to breathe underwater regularly.

Can I use it instead of a scuba set?

No. There is no reserve, no redundancy, no gauge to rely on and no buddy system built around it. It is a tool for short shallow tasks - a propeller, a mooring line, a dropped phone off a jetty - not a way to go diving.

How do I refill it?

At a dive centre with a filtered breathing-air compressor, or slowly with a high-pressure hand pump. Never fill it from a workshop or tyre compressor: that air contains oil mist and moisture that should not go into your lungs.

How deep can I go?

Keep it shallow - a few metres. The deeper you go the faster the air goes, the greater the pressure risks, and the less margin you have to reach the surface if it empties. It is not a deep-water device.

How do I look after it?

Rinse the whole unit in fresh water after the sea, dry it out of the sun, and store it with some pressure in the cylinder so moisture does not get in. Have the cylinder and valve inspected at a dive centre periodically, as you would any pressure vessel.
