Highlights

120 g, and a clear intention

Even balance and a Slimbody profile. Control and placement.

Even balance

Mass near the hand, so the racquet is quick and the placement is yours.

Adaptive Fan Pattern

Ships in the standard 16 x 17 for power; restring to the 12 x 17 fan for control and bite.

Teardrop head, open throat

A longer string bed and a larger sweet spot than a closed-throat racquet.

20 to 30 lb tension

Squash strings far looser than tennis. That is normal, not a mistake.

Product description

About this product

HEAD’s Speed 120 SB – a 120 g teardrop squash racquet with an open throat, from their 2025 range.

This one is for the control and feel player. SB stands for Slimbody: an exceptionally aerodynamic, manoeuvrable profile built for retrieving balls tight to the wall. An even balance means the racquet does less of the work and you have more say over placement.

The Adaptive Fan Pattern is the interesting part. The racquet ships strung in the standard 16 by 17 pattern, which gives more power; it can be restrung in a 12 by 17 fan pattern, which opens the string spacing for more control and bite. If you want the fan pattern you will need to have it restrung – it does not come that way.

The two 120 g HEAD racquets we stock are worth comparing directly, because the weight is identical and the character is not. The Extreme is head-heavy on a 495 cm2 head with a 12 by 17 pattern: power first. The Speed SB is even-balanced on a slightly larger 500 cm2 head with a choice of string patterns: control first. Same weight, opposite intentions.

Recommended tension is 20 to 30 lb, which is far looser than a tennis racquet and normal for squash. The grip is HEAD HydroSorb Pro.

One thing worth confirming before you order: HEAD make a Speed 120 in a non-SB version and Speed and Extreme models at 135 g as well, with different product codes. Tell us what you are after and we will make sure the racquet in the box is the one you wanted.

Questions

Good to know

What do the dots on a squash ball mean?

How much it bounces, and therefore how long rallies last. Fastest and bounciest to slowest and deadest: blue, red, single yellow, double yellow. Double yellow is the competition ball - the lowest bounce of all, because strong players hitting hard would otherwise produce endless rallies.

Which squash ball should a beginner buy?

A blue dot, and nothing else. A squash ball only bounces properly once it is hot, and a double yellow needs the most warming of any ball. A beginner cannot hit hard enough to warm it, so it dies on the floor, every rally lasts two shots, and they conclude they are bad at squash. A blue dot is larger and bounces cold - they will have real rallies on day one.

What does racquet balance change in squash?

Where the weight sits. Head-heavy puts mass at the top, which gives more power through the ball on a drive or a kill - and makes the racquet slower to move. Even or head-light balance keeps mass near the hand, which is quicker in a fast exchange at the front and gives you more say over placement.

What weight squash racquet should I buy?

Most modern racquets are 110 to 140 g. Lighter is quicker and more manoeuvrable; heavier is more stable against a hard-hit ball and more powerful. 120 g is the popular middle and suits most club players. Below 110 g you are into specialist territory.

Why does string tension matter?

Lower tension gives more power and a trampoline effect; higher tension gives more control and a crisper feel. Squash racquets string much looser than tennis ones - 20 to 30 lb is the normal window. Start mid-range and adjust from there.

How often should a squash racquet be restrung?

Same rule as tennis: as many times a year as you play per week. Strings die long before they break, and a dead stringbed means you swing harder to get the same ball, which is how technique falls apart.

How does the climate here affect equipment?

Heat is hard on strings - polyester loses tension fastest of all string types and heat accelerates it sharply, so expect to restring more often than a European schedule suggests. Never leave a racket in a car boot. Humidity is hard on grips and on natural gut, which absorbs moisture and softens. And pressurised balls go dead faster in heat, opened or not.
