About this product
A two-piece linesman flag set for officiating football, rugby, hockey and similar codes.
An assistant referee’s flag has exactly one job: to be seen instantly by the referee, who may be seventy metres away, moving, and looking past a crowd, a treeline or a set of floodlights. That is why officiating flags are made in bright fluorescent colours and bold patterns rather than in club colours – a plain dark flag disappears against a background that a chequered fluorescent one stands out from.
What the flag communicates is more than most spectators realise: the ball leaving the field and which side gets the throw-in, corner or goal kick; offside, and roughly where across the pitch; fouls the referee has not seen or is unsighted for; and substitutions. It is raised to get attention and then angled to say which way.
A matched pair matters at any level above a kickabout. Both assistants carrying the same design is the convention in professional football, and at club and school level it simply looks like the match is being taken seriously.
Keep them out of the sun between matches. UV fades bright flag fabric noticeably within a season in this climate, and a faded flag is harder to see – which defeats the entire purpose of owning one. Roll rather than fold them, so the fabric does not crease permanently along a single line.
