Highlights

Yellow and blue for a reason

A white volleyball vanishes against a pale ceiling and against bright sky. The two-colour panels used on every modern match ball are not decoration - the contrast makes the ball-s spin visible in flight, which is how a receiver reads where it is going.

18 panels

The standard modern volleyball panel count, for a uniform surface and predictable flight.

High-visibility colour

Yellow and blue panels, so the ball-s rotation is readable in the air.

Nylon wound carcass

The winding under the cover is what keeps a ball round and holds its shape.

Training and recreational

Sized and built for club training, schools and social matches.

Product description

About this product

Vector X Avenger – in stock at 361 Degrees Adventure in Dar es Salaam.

The Avenger is Vector X-s 18-panel volleyball in yellow and blue, built for training and recreational play.

The colour scheme is worth a word, because it is genuinely functional. Volleyball moved from plain white balls to two- and three-colour panels for the same reason tennis balls became yellow: visibility. Against a pale hall ceiling or a bright sky, a white ball has almost no contrast and, more importantly, no visible rotation. Coloured panels make the spin obvious in flight, and reading spin is how a receiver judges where a served ball is going to move.

Eighteen panels is the standard modern arrangement and gives a uniform surface. Underneath, a nylon-wound carcass keeps the ball round – that winding is the structural part of a ball, and it is what separates one that holds its shape for years from one that goes lopsided in a season.

A note on sizing. Internationally, size 5 is the adult ball and size 4 is a junior one, but Indian manufacturers label their standard adult ball size 4, and Vector X-s own comparable size 4 balls measure about 21 cm across – roughly 66 cm in circumference, which is full adult size. Treat the number on the box as a regional convention rather than a junior designation.

One correction worth making: some listings give this ball a weight of 460 g. That is a packed shipping weight, not the ball. Vector X-s comparable balls weigh about 250 g, which is the right order of magnitude for a volleyball – FIVB specify 260 to 280 g for a size 5.

Questions

Good to know

Is a size 4 volleyball a junior ball?

Not in this case. Internationally, size 5 is the adult ball (65-67 cm, 260-280 g) and size 4 is a junior one. But Indian manufacturers - Nivia, Cosco, Vector X - label their standard adult volleyball size 4, and it measures close to the full 66 cm. Judge it by circumference rather than by the number on the box.

Why yellow and blue rather than white?

Visibility, and specifically spin. Coloured panels let a receiver see the ball rotating in the air, which is how you read where a served ball will move. A plain white ball against a pale ceiling shows neither its position nor its spin clearly.

Some sites say it weighs 460 g - is that right?

No. That is a packed shipping weight. A volleyball weighs around 250 to 280 g; FIVB specify 260 to 280 g for the adult size 5. A 460 g ball would be painful to receive.

Is the Avenger still made?

It does not appear in Vector X-s current published volleyball catalogue, so it may be discontinued or a marketplace-only line. The ball itself is a straightforward 18-panel training volleyball; we flag it so you know no manufacturer spec sheet exists for it.

How hard should a volleyball be inflated?

FIVB specify 0.30 to 0.325 kg/cm2, which is about 4.3 to 4.6 psi - considerably softer than a football. An over-inflated volleyball is painful on the forearms and bounces unpredictably off a block. If you have no gauge, press with a thumb: it should give noticeably.

Is it a match ball or a training ball?

Training and recreational. A competition ball is a different grade - softer cover, tighter tolerances, and usually an FIVB or national federation approval mark. For school and club training this is the sensible buy.

How should I look after a ball in this climate?

Keep it out of direct sun when you are not playing, and out of a hot car. Heat raises the internal pressure and ages the cover and the bladder. Wipe the dust off after playing outdoors - grit ground into the surface is what wears the grip channels smooth.
