The SG Super Club is a club-grade batting leg guard in PVC with traditional cotton-filled knee rolls.
Traditional construction is worth defending, because moulded pads have become fashionable and they are not straightforwardly better. Cotton-filled knee rolls – the horizontal bolsters across the front of the knee – do two things a moulded shell struggles with. They spread the impact of a ball landing on the kneecap across a much wider area of the joint, and they act as a hinge, so the pad bends where your leg bends and you can actually run between the wickets. Moulded pads are lighter and look sharper; traditional pads protect the knee better and run better.
The reinforcement on the top hat and side wing covers the two places a plain pad leaves exposed. The top hat is the section above the knee, where a rising ball that beats the bat lands. The side wing wraps the outside of the leg, where a ball that misses the front of the pad goes.
The instep – the part under the foot – is the section that wears out on any pad, because it drags on the ground every time you run. It is worth checking at the start of each season.
Three sizes, from junior at 40 to 42 cm up to adult at 44 to 46 cm. Measure from the middle of the kneecap to the top of the shoe, and tell us whether the player is right or left handed.
