About this product
Universal 569as Cricket Bails – in stock at 361 Degrees Adventure in Dar es Salaam.
These are replacement cricket bails.
A bail is a small turned piece of wood with a spigot at each end, resting in the grooves on top of two adjacent stumps. Its job is to fall – it is the visible, unarguable evidence that the wicket has been put down, and every decision for bowled, stumped and run out at that end depends on it.
Because it is small and light and lands wherever it is flicked, it is the item most often lost on a cricket field. A club with exactly two bails per set spends time it does not have crawling through outfield grass. Buying spares is one of the few purchases in cricket that is simply obvious.
The Laws specify the dimensions of a full-size bail: 10.95 cm overall, with a barrel of 5.40 cm and spigots of 3.50 cm and 2.06 cm. Those proportions matter – a bail that is too heavy will not be dislodged by a light touch, and one that is too light blows off in a breeze, which is why the Laws allow umpires to dispense with bails in high wind.
Wood is the traditional material and it has the right combination of lightness and heft. Keep bails dry between matches; wooden bails left damp swell slightly and stop sitting properly in the grooves.
