Highlights

Alum tanning is what keeps a ball round

Alum-tanned leather is treated with aluminium salts rather than vegetable tannins. It stays firmer, holds its shape under repeated impact and resists going soft when it gets damp - which is why every serious cricket ball is made from it.

Alum-tanned leather

The firm, shape-holding leather used on all serious cricket balls.

Naturally seasoned inner core

A cork and wound-thread core, seasoned rather than rushed, which is what gives a ball its life.

Red

The traditional colour for daylight and longer-format cricket.

Club grade

Stanford-s own positioning - a match and serious practice ball rather than a professional one.

Product description

About this product

True Test Cricket Ball – in stock at 361 Degrees Adventure in Tanzania.

The SF True Test is Stanford-s red leather cricket ball, which they position for club cricketers.

The construction of a leather cricket ball is worth understanding, because it explains the price range. At the centre is a cork core, wound tightly with layers of thread. Over that goes leather, alum-tanned – treated with aluminium salts rather than vegetable tannins, which keeps it firm, helps it hold its shape under repeated impact and stops it going soft in damp. The halves are stitched together, and the seam is the raised row of stitching around the middle.

That seam is the whole bowling game. It catches the air asymmetrically as the ball travels, which is what makes it swing, and it grips the pitch to produce movement off the surface. It is also the first thing to fail on a cheap ball: a flattened seam after ten overs turns a ball into something that does nothing for a bowler.

Stanford do not publish a weight for this ball, and we will not assume one. Under the Laws of Cricket a men-s ball is 155.9 to 163 g with a circumference of 22.4 to 22.9 cm, and leather balls sold for adult cricket are normally made to that. If the exact weight matters for a competition, ask us and we will weigh the stock.

Red is for daylight, longer-format cricket against a white sightscreen. It is the format-neutral choice for club and school cricket here.

Questions

Good to know

What does a cricket ball weigh?

Under the Laws of Cricket, a mens ball is 155.9 to 163 g with a circumference of 22.4 to 22.9 cm. A womens ball is 140 to 151 g, and an under-13 junior ball 133 to 144 g. Red balls are used for the longer format, white for limited-overs and floodlit cricket, and pink for day-night matches.

Why does the seam matter so much?

It is the only thing on the ball a bowler can use. The raised stitching catches the air asymmetrically, which is what produces swing, and it grips the pitch to produce seam movement off the surface. A ball with a flattened seam is a dead ball for a bowler, which is why seam quality is what separates a good ball from a cheap one.

Why are cricket balls different colours?

Visibility against the background. Red is the traditional ball for the longer format, played in daylight against a white sightscreen. White is used for limited-overs and floodlit cricket, where players wear coloured clothing and a red ball would be hard to pick up. Pink was developed for day-night matches - it stays visible under lights without the white ball-s problem of disappearing against the players.

Why is no weight printed?

Because Stanford do not publish one for this ball, and we will not guess. Adult leather balls are normally made to the 155.9-163 g range set by the Laws. If an exact weight matters for a competition, ask us and we will weigh the stock.

How do I look after a leather ball?

Keep it dry and out of the sun. Wipe the dirt off after use and store it somewhere cool - heat dries the leather and hardens it, and a ball left in the sun on a hot day goes hard and loses its seam early. Never soak a leather ball; if it gets wet, dry it slowly in the shade rather than in the sun.

How many overs does a ball like this last?

At club level, a good leather ball will stay usable for an innings and often longer, though the seam softens and the shine goes. Practice balls are usually retired to net duty once they have lost their seam rather than thrown away.

Can I use a leather ball without protective equipment?

No. A leather ball is hard and heavy and travels fast. A helmet, gloves, pads and an abdominal guard are the minimum for batting, and no one should face one in a net without them.
