Highlights

It covers the gap nothing else does

Pads stop at the knee and the bat only covers so much. The front thigh is the one significant piece of a batsman that has nothing over it - and a ball that beats the bat on the leg side goes straight into it at full pace. A thigh guard is not an optional extra.

Covers the leading thigh

The area between the top of the pads and the hip, which pads and bat both leave open.

Strapped to the leg

Held in place so it stays over the thigh through the stroke and the run.

For left-handed batsmen

Matched to the player rather than one size for everyone.

Worn under the trousers

Sits against the leg under whites or kit, out of the way of the stroke.

Product description

About this product

Thigh Guard Left Hand – in stock at 361 Degrees Adventure in Tanzania.

This is a batting thigh guard for a left-handed batsman – it goes on the right thigh, which is the leading leg for a left-hander.

The case for a thigh guard is simple geometry. Batting pads stop at the knee. The bat covers the line it is on. Between the top of the pads and the hip there is a large area of leg with nothing over it, and it happens to be the area a ball that beats the bat down the leg side arrives at. A cricket ball at full pace into an unprotected thigh raises a haematoma that takes weeks to clear and can be genuinely serious.

It goes on the leading leg – the leg turned towards the bowler, which is the left for a right-hander and the right for a left-hander. Many players also wear a thinner inner guard on the other thigh, which covers the inside of the back leg.

Fit is the thing that decides whether it works. A thigh guard that slides round the leg during a stroke is protecting the side of the thigh while the ball hits the front. Strap it firmly enough that it does not rotate, and check it between overs – most players adjust theirs constantly because they were not tight enough to begin with.

Wear it under the trousers. It is designed to sit against the leg where it will not catch on anything.

Our supplier does not publish dimensions or a size chart for this guard. Tell us the player-s height or thigh measurement and we will check the stock against it before shipping.

Questions

Good to know

Which leg does a thigh guard go on?

The leading leg - the left leg for a right-handed batsman, the right leg for a left-hander. That is the thigh turned towards the bowler, and the one a ball that beats the bat lands on. Many players also wear a smaller inner guard on the other leg.

Do I need an inner thigh guard as well?

Many players wear one - a thinner pad on the inside of the back thigh, which covers the area the main guard does not. Some manufacturers now sell integrated units covering both; we stock one of those as well.

How tight should it be?

Tight enough that it cannot rotate around the leg when you play a stroke or run. A guard that has slid round is covering the side of the thigh while the ball hits the front. If you find yourself adjusting it every over, it was too loose from the start.

Can I wear it over my trousers?

It is designed to go underneath. Worn outside it catches on the bat, on the pads and on your own hands, and it moves far more.

What size do I need?

Our supplier does not publish a size chart. Tell us the player-s height or the measurement round the thigh and we will check what is in stock before it ships.

Is a thigh guard really necessary?

Yes. It covers the one significant area of a batsman that neither pads nor bat protect, and it is exactly where a ball that beats the bat down the leg side lands. A full-pace ball into a bare thigh is a serious injury.

How do I look after protective gear in this climate?

Take it out of the bag the moment you get home and let it dry in the shade. Padding and straps that stay damp in a closed kit bag grow mould and rot within weeks here - far faster than the equipment wears out from use. This is the single thing that decides how long cricket kit lasts in Tanzania.

Do you deliver in Dar es Salaam?

Yes. We deliver across Dar es Salaam and ship nationwide to Arusha, Mwanza, Dodoma, Zanzibar and beyond. You can also collect from our shop.
