Highlights

Rowed, not paddled - and better for fishing because of it

High sides, bench seats, an inflatable floor and rod holders. You sit up and face the water instead of lying back in a cockpit.

Rated to 400 kg

Three adults plus a cool box, tackle and a day's water. The load rating is where a raft pulls away from a kayak of the same length.

Three-layer TriTech

A woven core laminated between two PVC layers, with an antimicrobial treatment - built for a boat that lives damp in a hot climate.

Built for fishing

Rod holders, an inflatable floor to stand a cool box on, and high sides that keep spray out while you work.

Motor-ready

Eyelets for a motor mount so a small outboard can be added later, up to the power limit given in the specifications.

Product description

About this product

The difference between a raft and a kayak is what you do with your arms. In a kayak you sit low with your legs out in front and swing a double-bladed paddle. In a raft you sit up on a bench, face backwards, and row with a pair of oars in oarlocks – which is slower, but far less tiring over a long afternoon, and far easier if you have never done it before.

That is what this boat is. It is a rowed inflatable raft with high side tubes, bench seats, an inflatable floor and oarlocks moulded into the tubes. For fishing it is the better shape by a wide margin: you can face the water, stand up briefly, put a cool box in the middle, and leave rods in the built-in holders without everything sliding into your lap.

The material is Bestway’s three-layer TriTech, which is a step up from the single-layer fabric on their entry boats – a woven core between two layers of PVC, with an Ultra-Fresh antimicrobial treatment that matters when a boat spends its life damp in a hot climate. Three independent air chambers mean a puncture in one leaves the others holding the boat up.

There are eyelets for a motor mount, so a small outboard can be fitted later – the bracket and the motor are not included, and the power limit is specified below. It suits the creeks and bays around Dar es Salaam, the Rufiji delta, Lake Victoria and Lake Tanganyika, and sheltered water off Bagamoyo and Kigamboni. Wear buoyancy aids and treat offshore wind as the main hazard.

Questions

Good to know

Is this a kayak or a raft?

A raft. You sit up on a bench and row with two oars in oarlocks, facing backwards. It is not paddled with a double-bladed kayak paddle. If you want a kayak, our Rapid and Cove Champion models are the ones to look at.

Which is better for fishing?

This, by a clear margin. You face the water, there are rod holders built in, the floor takes a cool box, and the high sides keep spray off your tackle. A kayak is faster but you sit low with your legs in the way.

Can I fit an outboard motor?

There are eyelets for a motor mount, rated to a maximum of 2 hp. The mount and the motor are both sold separately - tell us what you have in mind and we will advise on what fits.

What does 400 kg actually mean in practice?

Three adults of average build plus around 150 kg of gear, or two adults with a lot of kit. Keep the load spread out rather than piled at one end.

Is it safe on the sea here?

In sheltered bays and creeks in calm conditions, with buoyancy aids. It is a recreational raft, not an offshore boat. Stay inside the reef, avoid surf, and watch offshore wind - it pushes a light inflatable out faster than you can row back.

How long does it take to inflate?

Fifteen minutes or so with the supplied hand pump for all three chambers and the floor. Firm rather than rock hard, and let air out if it stands in the sun.

How do I look after it in salt water?

Rinse the whole boat with fresh water after every sea trip, including the valves and the underside, and let it dry completely before rolling it up. Salt left to dry in the seams is what ages an inflatable fastest on this coast.

Can I leave it inflated in the sun?

Not for long. Equatorial sun degrades the material over time and raises the internal pressure, which stresses the seams. Let some air out if it is standing in full sun, and store it deflated, dry and out of direct light.
