About this product

Rigging a soft plastic weedless looks simple and goes wrong in one particular way: the bait fills the gap of the hook, so when a fish takes it the point has nothing to travel through and never reaches the jaw. The answer is gap. The Mega Bite is an extra-wide-gap worm hook designed specifically so that a fat soft plastic can sit in it and there is still bite left over.

The shank has Mustad Z-bend – a sharp double kink just behind the eye that grips the head of the bait and stops it sliding down the shank every time you cast. A soft plastic that has bunched down the hook fishes badly and looks worse.

The point is Mustad Opti-Angle needle point with 4.3 UltraPoint, and the steel is Nor-Tempered. Mustad make this pattern in both black nickel and red, and it is one of the few patterns where red is genuinely in their catalogue rather than a retail description.

It is a lure-fishing hook – Texas rigged, Carolina rigged, or fished free-swimming on a large worm or creature bait. In Tanzania that means bass, tigerfish, Nile perch and catfish inland, and snapper, grunter and queenfish on soft plastics inshore.

Why does the gap matter so much on a worm hook?

Because the bait occupies it. When a fish crushes a Texas-rigged plastic, the point has to travel through the bait before it reaches the jaw. A wide gap leaves that clearance; a narrow one means you pull the lure out of the fish mouth.

How do I Texas rig it?

Push the point into the nose of the bait about a centimetre, out through the side, slide the bait up over the Z-bend to the eye, then rotate the hook and bury the point back into the body so it lies just under the surface of the plastic. Done right it is nearly weedless.

What is the Z-bend for?

It is a sharp kink behind the eye that grips the bait head. Without it, a soft plastic slides down the shank on every cast and ends up bunched around the bend, which ruins both the action and the hook-up.

What is UltraPoint?

Mustad point package. The point is sharpened in three stages by their Opti-Angle process, which removes less metal than conventional grinding, so the point is sharper and - more importantly - stays sharp for longer instead of rolling over on the first piece of coral. Mustad specify it as 4.3 UltraPoint, meaning the point length is 4.3 times the wire diameter.

What does Nor-Tempered mean?

Mustad three-stage computer-controlled heat treatment, done in Norway. It gives the steel a fine-grained microstructure, which Mustad state increases hook strength by up to 30 per cent over conventional tempering. It is the reason a Mustad hook of a given wire gauge bends less than a cheaper one.

What will I use it for in Tanzania?

Inland, bass, tigerfish, Nile perch and catfish on soft plastics. Inshore, snapper, grunter and queenfish on plastics fished around structure. It is a lure hook, not a bait hook.

How do I look after hooks in salt water?

Rinse used hooks in fresh water and dry them before they go back in the box - a wet salty hook rusts its neighbours as well as itself. Keep them in a sealed box rather than an open tray, and throw away any hook whose point will not catch on a thumbnail.
