The Sea Monster is one of Mustad older big-game patterns and it makes no attempt to be clever. It is a heavy forged J hook with a large ringed eye, made for bottom fishing and heavy bait work in the sea. Forging flattens the wire slightly through the bend, which is what stops a hook of this size opening out under a fish that has decided to go back into the reef.

The large eye matters more than it sounds. Heavy leader – 200 lb mono or a crimped trace – needs room, and a small eye either crowds the knot or forces you to use thinner leader than the fishing deserves.
