Ask anyone who fishes bait over reef what hook they use and the answer is almost always an octopus or beak pattern. The shape is short in the shank with the point turned back and slightly reversed, which makes it sit compactly in a bait, present small, and find the corner of the jaw when a fish moves off with it.

Mustad 92553NP is their version, and it is the pattern their own copy names first for sea bass, snapper and reef species such as tautog and the wrasse family, on pilchard, crab, mackerel, sardine or squid baits. It is 1X Strong – wire one size heavier than standard – forged, with their Opti-Angle needle point and 4.3 UltraPoint, and it carries baitholder barbs on the shank to stop soft baits sliding off.

The up-turned tapered eye is there for snelling. A snell knot wraps the shank rather than pulling on the eye, so the force runs straight along the hook, and on a short-shanked bait hook that measurably improves hook-ups. It is worth learning if you fish bait at all.
