About this product

Drop-shotting is a deadly technique with one persistent nuisance: line twist. The bait sits on a short tag above a weight, and as it works it rotates – and on a fixed hook that rotation has nowhere to go except up the line. After an hour you have a spool full of coils.

Mustad answer is to weld the hook to a mini swivel. Your main line ties to one end of the swivel, the dropper to the weight comes off the other, and the hook turns freely through 360 degrees. The bait can spin as much as it likes and the line never knows.

The hook itself is short-shanked with a wide gap and an up-turned ringed eye, so the point sits upward where a drop-shot hook-up actually occurs. It is fine wire, which suits the light hook-sets drop-shotting involves, with Mustad Opti-Angle needle point and 4.3 UltraPoint, Nor-Tempered steel and a black nickel finish.

How do I set up a drop shot rig?

Main line to one end of the swivel, a short length of mono from the other end down to a weight, and the bait on the hook. The weight sits on the bottom and the bait hangs above it at whatever height you set the dropper.

Why does drop-shotting twist line?

Because the bait rotates on a short tag and the twist has nowhere to unwind. The integral swivel on this hook lets the hook turn freely instead, so the line stays straight.

How do I rig the bait?

Nose-hook it, through the head only, so the plastic hangs horizontally and can move freely. Threading it up the shank kills the action, which is the whole point of drop-shotting.

How do I fish it?

Almost in place. Let the weight settle on the bottom, keep a little tension, and shake the rod tip so the bait quivers without moving the weight. Occasional small lifts and long pauses. It is a technique for tempting fish rather than provoking them.

How do I look after hooks in salt water?
