Highlights

The resistance comes on the way down

A gym dumbbell is hardest when you lift it. A water barbell is hardest when you push it under and hold it there - buoyancy works upwards, so the muscles that fight it are the ones a land weight barely touches. The harder you push, the more it pushes back.

Buoyant, not heavy

Light to carry, hard to submerge. All the resistance happens underwater.

Closed-cell EVA foam

Does not soak up water, so the buoyancy stays the same session after session.

Soft moulded grip

Comfortable to hold with wet hands for a long class - no metal, no knurling, nothing to grind the palm.

Sold as one piece

Buy a single for one-arm work or two for a matched pair.

Product description

About this product

Aqua dumbbells work the opposite way round to gym weights. On land, gravity means the effort is in the lift. In water, the foam wants to rise, so the effort is in pushing it down and controlling it back up. That reverses which muscles do the work and takes almost all the impact out of the movement, which is why aqua classes and physiotherapists use them so heavily.

Resistance is self-regulating. Move slowly and it is gentle. Move fast and the water resists much harder, because drag rises sharply with speed. The same pair of dumbbells suits a rehabilitation patient moving carefully and a fit swimmer working hard, without changing anything but tempo. There is no weight to select and nothing to drop on your foot.

They are also a support aid. Held out to the sides in deep water they keep you vertical for deep-water running, which is the standard way for a runner with a joint injury to keep their fitness while the injury settles. For older swimmers, anyone carrying extra weight, or anyone recovering from a knee or hip problem, water work with these is close to the only resistance training that costs the joints nothing.

The foam is closed-cell EVA – the same material as the belts and noodles – so it does not take on water. Rinse the chlorine off, dry it in the shade, and keep it out of long sun, which is what breaks foam down.

Questions

Good to know

How heavy are they?

They are not heavy - that is the point. In water they float, and the effort comes from pushing them under and controlling them. On land they weigh almost nothing, which is part of why they suit people who cannot handle a gym weight.

How do I make the exercise harder?

Move faster. Water resistance rises sharply with speed, so the same dumbbell is gentle at a slow tempo and demanding at a quick one. Going deeper and using a wider arc also increases the work.

Do I need to be able to swim?

Not for shallow-water work in chest-deep water with your feet on the floor. For deep-water exercise where you use them to stay vertical, you should be comfortable in deep water and ideally wearing a float belt too.

Is one piece enough?

For single-arm work and for balance drills, yes. Most aqua fitness routines use a matched pair, so if you are following a class you will want two.

Are these good for joint problems?

Water exercise removes almost all the impact, which is why it is so widely used in rehabilitation. Buoyancy takes the load off knees and hips while still giving the muscles something to work against. Follow your physiotherapist-s guidance on what movements to do.

Can they be used as a float?

No. They are exercise equipment, not a buoyancy aid, and they are not built to support a person-s weight in the water. Do not use them in place of a float for a non-swimmer.

How do I look after them?

Rinse the chlorine or salt off after each session and dry in the shade. Closed-cell foam left in strong sun goes chalky and starts crumbling at the edges - keep them indoors between sessions.

Do you deliver in Dar es Salaam?

Yes. We deliver across Dar es Salaam and ship nationwide to Arusha, Mwanza, Dodoma, Zanzibar and beyond. You can also collect from our shop.
