Highlights

The lining is what keeps your fist safe

A glove is mostly foam, and what matters is whether that foam keeps its shape around your knuckles. A one-piece moulded lining holds its form for years; cheap layered foam compresses into a flat pad within a few months, and after that you are punching through nothing.

One-piece moulded lining

Holds its shape around the knuckles instead of compressing flat like layered foam.

Mesh palm

Lets heat and moisture out, which in this climate is the difference between usable and unbearable.

Boxing, kickboxing and Muay Thai

General training gloves rather than a specialist competition pair.

Men and women

Product description

About this product

Boxing Training Gloves – in stock at 361 Degrees Adventure in Dar es Salaam.

These are general training gloves for boxing, kickboxing and Muay Thai – the pair you use for bag work, pad work and general training.

The thing that separates a good training glove from a bad one is the padding, and specifically whether it stays in shape. A one-piece moulded lining is formed as a single block around the shape of the fist; cheap gloves use layers of sheet foam glued together, and those layers compress and shift with use until the padding over the knuckles is a flat, hard pad. At that point the glove is finished, and people carry on using it because it still looks fine from the outside.

The mesh palm matters more in Tanzania than in most places. A closed leather or synthetic palm turns into a sealed, wet environment within a few rounds, and a wet glove is uncomfortable, slippery inside and begins to smell almost immediately. Mesh lets the heat and moisture out.

Glove weight is the specification to get right. For most adults 14 or 16 oz is correct. The extra weight is extra padding: it protects your hands on the bag and protects a partner when you spar, and it makes your shoulders work harder, which is training in itself. Lighter gloves – 10 or 12 oz – are for competition and for lighter people. If you are buying one pair to do everything, buy 16 oz.

And wear hand wraps under them. A glove protects the person you hit; wraps protect the 27 bones in your own hand. Training without them is the standard route to a long-term hand injury.

Questions

Good to know

What glove weight should I buy?

For most adults, 14 or 16 oz. Heavier gloves have more padding, which protects your hands and your training partner and makes your arms work harder. 12 oz suits lighter people and bag work; 16 oz is the usual sparring standard. If you are buying one pair for everything, buy 16 oz.

Do I need hand wraps as well as gloves?

Yes, always. The hand has 27 bones and a boxing glove protects the person you are hitting more than it protects you. Wraps hold the small bones of the hand together, support the wrist and stop the knuckles spreading on impact. Training without them is how long-term hand injuries happen.

How do I know when gloves are finished?

Press the padding over the knuckles with your thumb. If it feels thin, hard or uneven compared with the rest of the glove, the foam has compressed and the glove is no longer protecting you. Gloves usually look fine long after they have stopped working.

Are bag gloves and sparring gloves different?

Yes. Bag gloves are lighter and firmer, built to protect your hands on a heavy bag. Sparring gloves are heavier with softer, thicker padding, to protect the person you are hitting. These are general training gloves - for one pair doing both jobs, go heavier.

Velcro or laces?

Velcro for training, because you can put them on and take them off alone. Laces give a better, tighter fit around the wrist and are what is used in competition, but you need someone else to tie them. For a training glove, velcro is the practical answer.

How do I stop boxing gear smelling?

Take it out of the bag the moment you get home and let it dry in the shade with the gloves opened up. In Dar es Salaam humidity, gloves left zipped in a kit bag start to smell within two days and the lining rots within months. Glove dryers or a rolled newspaper inside overnight help a great deal.

Can women and men use the same gloves?

Yes - gloves are sized by weight and hand size rather than by gender. Smaller hands are generally better served by a 12 or 14 oz glove, which will also be a narrower fit, but there is no separate specification.

Do you deliver in Dar es Salaam?

Yes. We deliver across Dar es Salaam and ship nationwide to Arusha, Mwanza, Dodoma, Zanzibar and beyond. You can also collect from our shop.
