Boxing & Martial Arts

Highlights

The fit is the whole product

A mouthguard that has not been moulded to your teeth sits loose, moves on impact and can be knocked out of place by the blow it was meant to absorb. Five minutes with a pan of hot water is what turns a piece of EVA into protection.

Food-grade EVA

The standard mouthguard material - soft enough to mould, firm enough to absorb impact.

Boil and bite

Softened in hot water and bitten to take the shape of your own teeth.

Boxing and contact sport

Boxing, martial arts, rugby, hockey and any sport where a blow to the face is possible.

Remouldable

If the fit is wrong, reheat and do it again.

Product description

About this product

Boxing Mouthguard – in stock at 361 Degrees Adventure in Tanzania.

This is a boil-and-bite mouthguard in food-grade EVA – the standard self-fitted guard used across boxing and contact sport.

A mouthguard does two jobs. The obvious one is protecting the teeth from a direct blow, and a knocked-out front tooth is a lifetime of dental work. The less obvious one matters more: a fitted guard holds the jaw slightly apart and spreads the force of an impact to the chin across the whole arch instead of driving the jaw joint straight up into the skull. That is why boxers wear them even when the risk to the teeth is low.

Fitting is not optional and it takes five minutes. Bring water to the boil and take it off the heat; leave the guard in for the time the instructions state – too long and it goes formless, too short and it will not take the shape; move it to cool water for a second or two so it does not burn you; then seat it on the upper teeth and bite down firmly, sucking in and pressing the outside with your fingers and tongue. Hold for half a minute, then drop it into cold water to set. If the result is loose or uneven, reheat and do it again.

A boil-and-bite guard is a compromise. A custom guard made by a dentist from an impression of your teeth fits better, is thinner for the same protection and stays in place better. For anyone sparring regularly or competing, that is a worthwhile investment. For training and recreational contact sport, a well-fitted boil-and-bite is what most people use.

Never share a mouthguard, and replace it when it has become thin, torn, or no longer grips. Rinse it after every use, store it in a vented case and keep it out of a hot car – EVA distorts in heat and a warped guard has to be refitted or replaced.

Spare parts and replacements for the boxing mouthguard are easier to get here than on an overseas order, which matters once the gear is in use.

Questions

Good to know

How do I fit it?

Boil water and take it off the heat. Soften the guard for the stated time, dip it briefly in cool water, then seat it on the upper teeth and bite down firmly while sucking in and pressing the outside with fingers and tongue. Hold for about 30 seconds, then set it in cold water. If it is loose, reheat and start again.

Does a mouthguard protect against concussion?

It reduces the force transmitted through the jaw to the skull, which is a real effect, but no mouthguard prevents concussion and it is wrong to train as though one does. Wear it for your teeth and your jaw, and take head impacts seriously regardless.

Boil-and-bite or a dentist-made guard?

A custom guard fits better, is thinner for the same protection and stays put. If you spar regularly or compete, it is worth the money. For training and recreational sport, a properly fitted boil-and-bite is what most people use and it works.

Why does it keep falling out?

Almost always a poor fit. Refit it, taking more care to suck the air out and press the material against the teeth and gums while it is still soft. If it still will not hold, the guard may be the wrong size for your mouth - ask us.

Can I share it or pass it on?

No. A mouthguard sits in the mouth and takes the shape of one person-s teeth. It is a personal item for hygiene reasons and it will not fit anyone else properly anyway.

How do I look after it?

Rinse it in cold water after every use, let it dry, and keep it in a vented case rather than a sealed one. Never leave it in a hot car - EVA distorts with heat and a warped guard has to be refitted or thrown away.

Do you deliver in Dar es Salaam?

Yes. We deliver across Dar es Salaam and ship nationwide to Arusha, Mwanza, Dodoma, Zanzibar and beyond. You can also collect from our shop.
