Hand wraps are long strips of fabric wound around the hand and wrist before the gloves go on. They are the cheapest thing in a boxer-s kit bag and the most important.

The reason is anatomy. Your hand contains 27 bones, most of them small, and a punch drives force straight back through the knuckles into the wrist. A glove is padding on the outside – it protects the person you hit. It does very little to stop the bones of your hand spreading on impact, and almost nothing to stop your wrist folding if a punch lands at a slight angle. Wraps do both: they compress the hand into a single solid unit and brace the wrist so it cannot bend under load.

Wrist injuries are the ones that end training. A bruised knuckle heals in a week; a damaged wrist is months, and it recurs. Most of the length of a wrap should go on the wrist for exactly that reason.

180 inches is the standard adult length, which is what allows a proper wrap – several turns around the wrist, across the knuckles, between each finger and back. Shorter 120-inch wraps are for children and smaller hands, and adults using them tend to skip the wrist or the fingers.

Wash them. They sit directly against the skin, soak up sweat for an hour and then go back in a bag – in this humidity that is a guaranteed smell within days, and it is the wraps rather than the gloves that are usually responsible. Wash them after every few sessions and dry them in the shade.

Do I need hand wraps as well as gloves?

Yes, always. The hand has 27 bones and a boxing glove protects the person you are hitting more than it protects you. Wraps hold the small bones of the hand together, support the wrist and stop the knuckles spreading on impact. Training without them is how long-term hand injuries happen.

Why 180 inches?

How do I wrap my hands?

Thumb loop first, then three or four turns around the wrist, up across the back of the hand, around the knuckles, between the fingers one at a time, and back down to finish at the wrist. Firm but not tight - if your fingers tingle or go white, unwrap and start again.

How tight should they be?

Firm with the hand open, comfortable with the fist closed. Wrap with your fingers spread: as you make a fist the hand expands, so a wrap that felt right with a closed fist will be far too tight when you open it.

Can I wash them?

Yes, and you should. Hand wash or put them in a mesh laundry bag so they do not tangle round everything else, and dry in the shade. They sit against the skin for an hour a session - they need washing more often than anything else in the bag.

How long do they last?

Months to years, depending on how often you train and wash them. Replace them when the elastic has gone and they no longer hold tension, or when they have stretched so much that a full wrap no longer reaches the wrist.

How do I stop boxing gear smelling?

Take it out of the bag the moment you get home and let it dry in the shade with the gloves opened up. In Dar es Salaam humidity, gloves left zipped in a kit bag start to smell within two days and the lining rots within months. Glove dryers or a rolled newspaper inside overnight help a great deal.
