This is a combined reflex trainer: a punching ball on a stand, with a bar that spins 360 degrees around the column.

The spinning bar is what makes it worth having. Almost everything you can train alone is offensive – the bag teaches you to hit, the pads teach combinations, the speed ball teaches rhythm. None of them teaches you to avoid being hit, which is half of boxing and the half that decides how long anyone lasts.

A bar sweeping round at head height forces the movements: slip to the side, duck under, step back, and get back into range. Because the bar keeps coming, it becomes continuous rather than a drill you do for ten repetitions and abandon. Doing that while also punching the ball is exactly the coordination problem a fight presents.

It also teaches the habit that is hardest to learn alone: moving your head after you punch. Standing still after throwing is what gets people hit, and no amount of bag work corrects it because a bag never punishes you for it.

Set the bar height to just below your own head height to start with, so it clips you rather than hits you hard, and speed it up as you get used to it. Wear wraps and light gloves.

Fill the base completely with water or sand. A trainer with a spinning bar is being pushed sideways constantly and a part-filled base lets the whole thing rock and walk across the floor.

Is it safe?

Set sensibly, yes. Start with the bar just below your head height so it brushes rather than strikes, and build the speed up as you get used to the timing. Do not set it to head height at full speed on the first session.
