Highlights

Lights in seconds, burns for about an hour

The 33 mm quick-light disc used for bakhoor, oud and shisha. One tablet carries a whole session without relighting.

Lights in seconds

Hold a flame to the edge and the tablet catches on its own, spreading across the disc without needing to be coaxed.

About an hour of steady heat

Long enough for a full bakhoor burning or a shisha session without stopping to swap the coal.

33 mm disc

The standard size for incense burners, mabkhara and most shisha bowls, so it fits what you already own.

Sealed tube

Keeps the tablets dry in coastal humidity, which is what stops quick-light charcoal from lighting properly.

Product description

About this product

These are the round quick-light charcoal discs used across Tanzania for bakhoor, oud, loban and shisha. Each tablet is 33 mm across – the size that sits correctly in an ordinary mabkhara, a ceramic incense burner or a standard shisha bowl – and they are made to catch from a single flame at the edge rather than needing a stove or a blowtorch.

Once lit, the tablet spreads its own glow across the disc in under a minute and then settles into a steady, even heat for roughly an hour. That is long enough for a full bakhoor burning, a majlis, or a shisha session without having to stop and swap the coal halfway through, which is the main practical difference between a quick-light tablet and loose lump charcoal.

They come in a sealed tube, and that packaging matters more here than it does in a dry climate. Quick-light charcoal works because of the accelerant pressed into the disc; in Dar es Salaam and Zanzibar humidity, tablets left open to the air absorb moisture and become slow and reluctant to catch. Keep the tube closed between uses and they light the same way in month six as on the day you bought them.

Use them only in a well-ventilated place. Burning charcoal of any kind produces carbon monoxide, so an open window, a veranda or an outdoor space is the right setting, never a closed room. Always let the tablet burn out fully in the burner rather than putting it in a bin, and keep the tube away from children.

Questions

Good to know

How do I light one?

Hold the edge of the tablet in a flame with tongs until it sparks and starts to glow, then set it in the burner and let the glow spread across the disc. It takes under a minute and needs no fanning.

How long does one tablet last?

Around an hour of steady heat, which covers a full bakhoor burning or a shisha session. Burn time is shorter in a draught and longer in a sheltered burner.

Will they still light after months in Dar es Salaam humidity?

If you keep them in the sealed tube, yes. Tablets left open absorb moisture from coastal air and become slow to catch, which is the commonest complaint with any quick-light charcoal.

Can I use these indoors?

Only in a well-ventilated space - an open window, a veranda, an open sitting room with air moving through. Burning charcoal produces carbon monoxide, so never use them in a closed or small unventilated room.

Do they fit a standard shisha bowl?

At 33 mm they fit most standard shisha bowls and incense burners. If your bowl is unusually small, measure it first - we are happy to check the fit against your burner in the showroom.

Is there a smell from the tablet itself?

There is a brief scent as the accelerant burns off in the first minute. Wait for the disc to be fully glowing before adding bakhoor or tobacco and the aroma stays clean.

How do I put one out safely?

Let it burn out in the burner where it sits. Never put a warm tablet in a bin or on a wooden surface - a tablet that looks grey and dead can still be hot enough to start a fire.

Do you stock these in Dar es Salaam?

Yes, we keep them continuously in the Dar es Salaam showroom and ship across Tanzania. Message us for quantities and delivery.

Where do these figures come from?

The figures on this page come from the supplier's own documentation rather than an independently tested manufacturer specification, and the table marks them as such. They are a good guide, but if a particular figure matters to you, ask us and we will check the item in the Dar es Salaam showroom before you buy.
