Product description

About this product

Instant Blockout Dome Tent – in stock at 361 Degrees Adventure in Tanzania.

An instant cabin tent whose fabric blocks up to 90% of sunlight, so the inside stays dark long after the sun is up.

Near the equator the sun clears the horizon at six and a standard tent turns into a lantern within minutes of it. Children wake, everyone else gives up, and a holiday runs on four hours of sleep. CORE’s BlockOut fabric is a denser weave built to stop that: up to 90% of light stays outside, so the sleeping space holds its darkness while the camp around it brightens.

The same fabric works at the other end of the day. Pitched in shade at midday it stays noticeably cooler and dimmer than a standard tent, which makes it usable for a rest rather than just for sleeping.

Setup is CORE’s instant system, poles pre-attached: unfold it, push out the telescoping legs, sixty seconds to standing. Inside is 11 ft x 9 ft with 72 in of headroom and near-vertical walls, rated for two queen air beds.

Ventilation is the thing to get right in a dark tent, and this one has a zippable ground vent feeding cool air in and four zippable mesh ceiling panels letting warm air out. Windows, doors and roof panels are all mesh and all zip closed, so you choose between view and darkness. Weather is the H2O Block system: 68D polyester rated 1200 mm, factory-taped rainfly, sealed seams, and no-see-um mesh against sandflies.

22 lbs (10 kg) in a 47 in bag.

Key Features

  • 11 ft x 9 ft of near-vertical cabin floor with 72 in (6 ft) of headroom, fits 2 queen air beds
  • Zippable ground vent plus four zippable mesh ceiling panels, so airflow is controllable in a dark tent
  • Mesh windows, doors and roof panels that all zip closed for privacy and weather
  • H2O Block weather protection: 68D polyester rated 1200 mm, fully taped rainfly, sealed seams
  • No-see-um mesh, finer than standard mesh, against sandflies and midges
  • Large wall organizer and a sealed electrical port
  • Wind-rated to 35 mph (56 km/h) with the guylines pegged out
  • 22 lbs (10 kg), packs to 47 in x 9 in x 9 in

Who It Suits

  • Families with young children who wake with the light
  • Anyone who works nights or simply does not want a 6 a.m. start on holiday
  • Camps with no natural shade, where a tent bakes and glows from sunrise
  • Car camping in Mikumi, Saadani, Ruaha and Bagamoyo
  • Buyers choosing between this and the standard instant cabin: this is the one for sleep

It is a 3-season tent for ordinary rain and wind, pegged down and guyed out. BlockOut darkens, and darker fabric in direct sun means using the vents deliberately rather than leaving them shut.

What’s Included

  • Tent with pre-attached poles
  • Rainfly with attached guylines
  • Wall organizer
  • Tent stakes
  • Carry bag

Questions

Good to know

How dark does it actually get?

CORE rates the fabric at blocking up to 90% of sunlight. In practice that is the difference between waking at first light and sleeping through to a reasonable hour. It is a dark room, not a blackout room.

Does a darker tent get hotter?

Darker fabric in direct sun absorbs more heat, which is exactly why this model has a zippable ground vent and four separate zippable ceiling panels rather than one fixed vent. Open them and pitch it in shade where you can, and it stays comfortable.

Is sixty seconds realistic?

For two people who have pitched it once, yes. The poles never leave the tent, so the work is unfolding it and extending the telescoping legs. Pegging down and running the guy ropes takes a few minutes more.

Does it really sleep six?

Six adults fit on the floor with bags left outside. Three adults plus gear is the comfortable arrangement. CORE rates the floor for two queen air beds.

Can I still see out?

Yes. The windows, doors and roof panels are all mesh and all zip closed independently, so you choose view or darkness panel by panel rather than all or nothing.

Will it keep the rain out?

The fabric is 68D polyester rated 1200 mm, the rainfly is factory taped and the seams are sealed, which handles ordinary rain. Pitch off low ground where water collects and peg the guylines out when wind is expected.

How do I look after it?

Dry it fully before packing, especially after coastal trips. Clean with a soft sponge, mild soap and cool water, never a machine wash: scrubbing or hot washing is what damages a coated fabric like this one.
