About this product

Three CyeeLife barrels in 90 percent tungsten, 22 g, steel tip, on the standard 2BA thread.

Barrels only is deliberate. A player who has settled on a shaft length and a flight shape does not want a new set imposing someone else’s setup – they want the barrel, and they will fit the shafts and flights they already know. Buying barrels alone is how a serious player replaces a worn set without starting over.

Ninety percent tungsten is the standard for league and professional play, and the reason is density rather than prestige. Tungsten is more than twice as dense as brass, so a 90 percent barrel at 22 g is physically much slimmer than a brass one at the same weight – Target’s own brass 22 g barrel measures 8.7 mm across against 6.5 mm for their 90 percent tungsten equivalent. Two millimetres sounds trivial until three darts are trying to occupy one treble bed.

The remaining ten percent is a binder alloy, usually nickel. Pure tungsten cannot be machined into a barrel – it is brittle and melts at around 3,400 degrees – so every tungsten dart is a sintered mix, and the percentage tells you how much of that mix is the dense part.

What does the tungsten percentage mean?

It is the proportion of tungsten by weight in the barrel alloy - the rest is a binder such as nickel, because pure tungsten is too brittle to machine. Tungsten is more than twice as dense as brass, so a higher percentage means a physically slimmer barrel at the same weight. Slimmer barrels take up less room in a treble bed, which is what lets three darts group in one segment.

Why buy barrels without shafts and flights?

Because once you have settled on a setup you do not want a new set imposing a different one. Barrels alone let you replace a worn set while keeping the shaft length and flight shape you already throw well with.

Brass or tungsten - what should I buy?

Brass is the right starting point for casual play and it is what most house darts are. 80 percent tungsten is the first properly serious step. 90 percent is the standard for league and professional play. Above 90 the gains get small and the price does not, so most players are better served by a well-shaped 90 percent barrel than by chasing 95.

Will they fit my existing shafts?

If your shafts are 2BA - which virtually all modern shafts are - yes. The older 1/4 inch thread is visibly fatter and coarser and is not compatible. Bring a shaft in if you are unsure.

What comes in the box?

Three barrels. Points, shafts and flights are not included on CyeeLife's barrel-only line, which is the point of buying it. We stock all three separately.

Steel tip or soft tip - which do I need?

Steel tip darts have a metal point and go into a sisal bristle board. Soft tip darts have a flexible plastic point and go into an electronic board. Never throw steel tips at an electronic board: the point punches through the plastic segments and can wreck the sensors underneath, and that is not repairable. Soft tips on a bristle board simply bounce out.

How should I sharpen a steel tip?

You are conditioning the point, not making it pointy. Roll the tip on the stone at a shallow angle, turning the dart as you go, until the burrs and flat spots from hitting wires are gone - ten or fifteen seconds is plenty. Leave it smooth and slightly rounded. A needle point is worse in every way: it skids off wires and bounces out, and it cuts sisal fibres instead of parting them, which puts permanent holes in the board.
