Nickel plating is a surface treatment over a base metal – on dart barrels that base is normally brass. It gives a bright, hard-wearing silver finish that resists the tarnishing brass develops, and it holds machined grip grooves reasonably well. What it does not do is change the density of what is underneath.

That distinction matters when you are comparing prices. A nickel-plated brass barrel at 22 g is physically fatter than a tungsten barrel at 22 g, because brass is less than half as dense – so it takes up more room in a treble bed. That is the trade-off you are making, and it is a perfectly reasonable one at this price. What you should not do is pay tungsten money for a plated brass barrel, and we are not going to describe this as a tungsten set, because it is not one.

Barrels only, on the standard 2BA thread, so they take the shafts, flights and points you already have.

Good to know

Is this a tungsten set?

No, and we want to be clear about it. Nickel plating is a surface finish, normally over a brass base. It looks bright and wears well, but the barrel underneath has brass density, so it is fatter at a given weight than a tungsten barrel would be.

What does the tungsten percentage mean?

It is the proportion of tungsten by weight in the barrel alloy - the rest is a binder such as nickel, because pure tungsten is too brittle to machine. Tungsten is more than twice as dense as brass, so a higher percentage means a physically slimmer barrel at the same weight. Slimmer barrels take up less room in a treble bed, which is what lets three darts group in one segment.

So should I buy tungsten instead?

If you are chasing tight grouping in a treble bed, yes - that is exactly what the density buys you. If you play socially and want a good-looking, hard-wearing barrel at a sensible price, plated brass is a perfectly sound choice.

Does the plating wear off?

Nickel is hard and wears well, but any plating eventually thins at the contact points where your fingers sit. It is cosmetic rather than functional - the barrel underneath is unaffected.

Is nickel a problem for sensitive skin?

It can be. Nickel is one of the commonest contact allergens, and if nickel jewellery irritates your skin then handling a plated barrel for a long session may too. Worth trying before a tournament.

What is 2BA, and will these parts fit my darts?

2BA is the standard dart thread - 4.7 mm major diameter - and virtually every modern barrel, shaft and point uses it. The older alternative is a 1/4 inch thread, noticeably fatter and coarser, found on some cheap brass and house darts. They are not interchangeable and forcing one into the other strips the thread. Flights are not threaded at all, so any standard-shape flight fits any standard-shape shaft.

Steel tip or soft tip - which do I need?

Steel tip darts have a metal point and go into a sisal bristle board. Soft tip darts have a flexible plastic point and go into an electronic board. Never throw steel tips at an electronic board: the point punches through the plastic segments and can wreck the sensors underneath, and that is not repairable. Soft tips on a bristle board simply bounce out.
