A dartboard and cabinet set from WIN.MAX – the board mounted inside a wooden cabinet whose doors close over it, usually carrying scoreboards on the inside faces.

A cabinet solves the two problems that stop people putting a board up at home. It protects the wall, because the doors and the cabinet body catch the strays that would otherwise leave a constellation of small holes around the board. And it closes, so the board is a piece of furniture when nobody is playing rather than a permanent statement about the living room.

The scoreboards on the doors are more useful than they look. 501 is a subtraction game and doing it in your head is most of the fun, but only if everyone can see the running total.

One important thing to settle before you order. WIN.MAX make cabinet sets in both configurations – bristle boards for steel tip darts, and electronic boards for soft tip. They look similar in photographs and they are completely different products, and throwing the wrong darts at either ruins it. Message us and we will confirm which configuration is in stock before you commit.

Is this a steel tip or an electronic board?

That is the thing to confirm before ordering. WIN.MAX make cabinet sets in both configurations and they look similar in photographs. Message us and we will tell you exactly which is in stock - throwing the wrong darts at either will ruin it.

Steel tip or soft tip - which do I need?

Steel tip darts have a metal point and go into a sisal bristle board. Soft tip darts have a flexible plastic point and go into an electronic board. Never throw steel tips at an electronic board: the point punches through the plastic segments and can wreck the sensors underneath, and that is not repairable. Soft tips on a bristle board simply bounce out.

Does the cabinet actually protect the wall?

Largely, yes. The doors and cabinet body catch most of the strays that would otherwise mark the wall around the board. For a wall you really care about, add a surround ring as well - together they cover almost everything.

What height do I hang it at?

For a steel tip bristle board, 1.73 m from the floor to the centre of the bullseye, with the throwing line 2.37 m horizontally from the board face. Electronic boards are usually hung to a different height - follow the board's own manual.

How do I set the board up correctly?

The bullseye goes 1.73 m from the floor, and the throwing line sits 2.37 m horizontally from the face of the board - measured to the board face, not the wall, because a board with a surround stands proud of it. Cross-check with the diagonal: 2.93 m from the centre of the bull to the back of the oche. If the diagonal does not match, one of your other two measurements is wrong.

Does the climate here affect darts equipment?

Sisal boards mind humidity more than anything else, so hang the board somewhere ventilated and out of driving rain rather than on an exposed veranda. Flights soften and curl if they are left in a hot car. Steel points pick up surface rust in coastal air - wipe them dry after a session and keep them out of a damp bag.

How do I make a dartboard last?

Rotate the number ring every few weeks so the 20, 19 and treble beds do not take all the wear. Keep the points conditioned but never needle-sharp. Do not soak the board or hang it in direct sun or driving rain - humidity swells sisal and sun dries it out, and both shorten its life. Pull darts out straight rather than levering them.
