A sensible first steel tip set

Middle of the weight range, standard thread, honest about the rest.

21 g is the sensible default

The most common steel tip weight, and the one that asks least of a developing throw.

2BA thread

Standard, so shafts, flights and points from any normal range will fit later.

Bristle boards only

Steel points into an electronic board destroy the segments and the sensors.

No tungsten claim

WIN.MAX publish no barrel material, so we do not invent one.

Product description

About this product

A 21 g steel tip set in a silver finish, from WIN.MAX’s Zeus line. Steel tip means a sisal bristle board – these are not for an electronic machine.

21 g sits in the middle of the usual steel tip range, which runs roughly 21 to 26 g, and the middle is a sensible place to start. A lighter dart needs a faster, flatter throw and punishes an inconsistent release; a heavier dart flies more forgivingly but drops more. 21 g asks the least of a developing action, which is why so many people settle around it and never move.

The barrels use the standard 2BA thread, so shafts, flights and points from any normal dart range will fit if you want to change the setup later.

We want to be straight about one thing: WIN.MAX do not publish a barrel material specification for the Zeus, and retail listings describe it variously. We are not going to call it tungsten, because we cannot evidence that. Treat it as a well-made metal dart at a sensible price – which is what it is – rather than a tungsten set.

Questions

Good to know

Steel tip or soft tip - which do I need?

Steel tip darts have a metal point and go into a sisal bristle board. Soft tip darts have a flexible plastic point and go into an electronic board. Never throw steel tips at an electronic board: the point punches through the plastic segments and can wreck the sensors underneath, and that is not repairable. Soft tips on a bristle board simply bounce out.

Is 21 g the right weight for me?

It is the most common starting weight in steel tip darts and a good default. Lighter darts need a faster, flatter throw and are less forgiving of an inconsistent release. Heavier ones fly more steadily but drop more. Start at 21 g and move only if something specific is bothering you.

Is this a tungsten set?

We are not stating that, because WIN.MAX do not publish a barrel material for the Zeus and we will not put a claim on the page we cannot back. Judge it as a solid entry-level metal dart. If you want a confirmed tungsten barrel, ask us about the 90 percent tungsten sets in our range.

What does the tungsten percentage mean?

It is the proportion of tungsten by weight in the barrel alloy - the rest is a binder such as nickel, because pure tungsten is too brittle to machine. Tungsten is more than twice as dense as brass, so a higher percentage means a physically slimmer barrel at the same weight. Slimmer barrels take up less room in a treble bed, which is what lets three darts group in one segment.

What is 2BA, and will these parts fit my darts?

2BA is the standard dart thread - 4.7 mm major diameter - and virtually every modern barrel, shaft and point uses it. The older alternative is a 1/4 inch thread, noticeably fatter and coarser, found on some cheap brass and house darts. They are not interchangeable and forcing one into the other strips the thread. Flights are not threaded at all, so any standard-shape flight fits any standard-shape shaft.

How should I sharpen a steel tip?

You are conditioning the point, not making it pointy. Roll the tip on the stone at a shallow angle, turning the dart as you go, until the burrs and flat spots from hitting wires are gone - ten or fifteen seconds is plenty. Leave it smooth and slightly rounded. A needle point is worse in every way: it skids off wires and bounces out, and it cuts sisal fibres instead of parting them, which puts permanent holes in the board.

How do I set the board up correctly?

The bullseye goes 1.73 m from the floor, and the throwing line sits 2.37 m horizontally from the face of the board - measured to the board face, not the wall, because a board with a surround stands proud of it. Cross-check with the diagonal: 2.93 m from the centre of the bull to the back of the oche. If the diagonal does not match, one of your other two measurements is wrong.
