About this product

The Wavestorm 8 ft Classic has probably put more people on their first wave than any other surfboard made. It is not a compromise board for children – it is a properly shaped 8-foot funboard that happens to be built out of foam, and experienced surfers keep one for small days precisely because it works.

The number that matters is 86 litres. Volume is what determines whether a beginner catches a wave or misses it, and 86 litres under an adult means you are paddling with the wave rather than chasing it. Combined with 22.5 in of width and 3.25 in of thickness, it makes standing up a matter of technique rather than luck.

Inside, an EPS foam core is reinforced with three marine-ply stringers running the length of the board. That is what separates this from the soft boards sold in supermarkets, which have one stringer or none and take a permanent bend within a season. The deck and rails are Wavestorm’s WBS-IXL crosslink skin – a water-barrier foam that is soft enough not to hurt when the board hits you, and sealed so it does not waterlog. The bottom is high-density polyethylene slick, which is hard and fast; a soft-bottomed board would be neither.

The deck carries a moulded traction pad for the back foot and a printed graphic under a UV-inhibiting layer. Three plastic thruster fins bolt through the bottom and come off for transport, and an ankle leash is included. That leash is the one part of the package worth upgrading early – it does the job, but a better leash is cheap insurance for a board this size.

At 5.2 kg it is light enough for a teenager to carry, and being foam it survives car parks, rocks and other surfers in a way a fibreglass board simply does not.

Good to know

Is this the right board to learn to surf on?

Yes - it is the standard answer to that question worldwide. Eight feet and 86 litres means you catch waves, the soft deck means it does not hurt when it hits you, and the foam construction survives the mistakes beginners make. Nothing shorter will teach you faster.

I can already surf. Is it worth having?

Many experienced surfers keep one for small, weak days and for lending to friends. On the kind of gutless one-foot afternoon that Dar es Salaam produces often, a foam 8-footer is more fun than a shortboard.

What is the rider weight limit?

Around 90 kg (200 lb). Heavier riders will still float but will find the board sits low and turns sluggishly.

Do fins and a leash come with it?

Yes - three removable bolt-through thruster fins and an ankle leash are included. The supplied leash is basic; if you surf regularly, upgrading it is worth doing and we stock replacements.

Where can I learn around Dar es Salaam?

The beaches south of the Kigamboni ferry get the most consistent small surf, and the city beaches produce rideable wind swell on breezy afternoons. Start in waist-deep whitewater over sand, not on the reef.

How do I look after a foam board in this heat?

Keep it out of direct sun when you are not using it and never leave it in a closed car. Heat is what makes any surfboard delaminate, and a foam board is no exception. Rinse it with fresh water and store it in shade, on its rails or flat on a rack.

Can it be repaired if it is damaged?

Minor deck damage can be sealed with a marine-grade adhesive suitable for polyethylene - normal surfboard resin will not bond to the slick bottom. Keep water out of the core; a foam board that soaks up water gets heavy and stays heavy.
