If you asked a shaper for one board that would work on most days for most riders, the numbers they would reach for are close to these: 5 ft 10 in long, 19 in wide, 2.5 in thick. There is a reason those figures keep recurring. The length is short enough to turn tightly off the back foot but long enough to paddle without fighting; the width and thickness give an adult rider enough volume to catch waves in ordinary surf rather than only in good surf.
The construction is epoxy over EPS, which is the more durable of the two ways to build a surfboard. The core is high-density expanded polystyrene, lighter than traditional polyurethane foam and floating higher for the same volume – which is why epoxy boards are the easier choice for anyone who is not surfing every day. Over it go layers of fibreglass cloth laminated with epoxy resin. Epoxy is stiffer and bonds harder than polyester, so the board keeps its shape instead of collecting the pressure dents a traditional board picks up under your knees and chest.
It also holds up better in this climate. A sealed epoxy skin resists UV and water ingress, and the stiffer laminate copes with the temperature swing between a board that has been on a hot beach and the sea it goes into.
