A bodyboard is the fastest way to get a first-timer riding waves, and the Ripple is the size most people should start on: 39 inches suits a teenager or a lighter adult, which is the bracket where cheap boards usually let you down. The difference here is in the layers.

The core is EPS – expanded polystyrene – which is light and floats high, so the board planes early and you catch waves that a denser core would miss. Running through it is an FRP stringer, a fibre-reinforced rod that stops the board bending permanently under load. That is the part that separates a board you still own next season from one that arrives home from the beach with a crease across the middle.

The deck is IXPE foam, heat-laminated rather than glued, giving a surface that is soft against your chest and ribs on a hard landing but does not soak up water or delaminate. How do I know if 39 inches is the right size for me?

Stand the board on its tail beside you - the nose should reach somewhere between your navel and the middle of your chest. That normally puts the 39 in a teenager or an adult up to roughly 70 kg. Heavier riders want a longer board.

Where can I use it around Dar es Salaam?

Anywhere with a shore break or a small wave running over sand. Kigamboni and the beaches south of the ferry pick up the cleanest small surf, and the island beaches off Dar work on a breezy afternoon. Bodyboards need much less wave than a surfboard does.

Do I need fins to ride it?

Not to start. In waist-deep water you can push off the bottom and catch the whitewater. Once you want to catch waves before they break, swim fins make a real difference - they are what let you match the speed of the wave.

Will it last in this sun?

Rinse it in fresh water after each session and keep it out of direct sun between rides - do not leave it face-up on the roof of a car or on hot sand for hours. UV and heat are what make a bodyboard deck go brittle and the slick separate. Stored in the shade it lasts for years.

Is it strong enough for an adult?

For an adult up to about 70 kg, yes. Above that the board still floats but starts to sink at the tail and rides slowly, which is why the heavier sizes exist.

Can children use it?

An older child will manage it, though a 33 in or 37 in board is easier for a small rider to control. Any child in the sea should be supervised and within their depth, whatever they are riding.

Why is the leash worn on the wrist rather than the ankle?

Bodyboards are ridden lying down, so the board stays in front of you and the leash goes on the upper arm or wrist. An ankle leash would drag the board past your legs in the wash.
