A straight side awning shades a strip beside the vehicle. Useful, but the kitchen is usually at the back, the tailgate is at the back, and so is everyone standing around while dinner cooks. A 270-degree awning wraps from the side around the rear, which puts the shade where people actually are.

Setting it up is a swing rather than an assembly. Unzip the cover, swing the frame out, and it stands on its own – then the telescopic poles go in for height and stability rather than being needed to lift it. On a hot afternoon at a camp site, the difference between that and threading poles into a straight awning is the difference between shade in one minute and shade in ten.

The fabric is 600D ripstop polyoxford rated to a 3,000 mm water column – heavier than most vehicle awnings, and a rating that matters in the Tanzanian long rains rather than only in a shower. The frame is aluminium, with 22 mm and 25 mm telescopic poles for adjustable height on uneven ground. The unfolded footprint is R200 x 250 cm.

Will it fit my vehicle?

It mounts to roof rack crossbars or a rack tray rather than to the roof itself, so what matters is your rack and its load rating, not the badge on the car. Send us a photograph of your roof setup and we will tell you honestly whether it will work.

How long does it take to put up?

Under a minute to swing out, then a couple more to set the poles and peg it. That is the main advantage of a 270 over a straight awning with a pole frame.

Does it need poles to stand?

It swings out and holds itself. The telescopic poles set the height, steady it on uneven ground and are essential in wind, but they are not what gets it up.

Will it hold in wind?

Pegged and guyed, it handles normal conditions. Unpegged, a 270 awning is a large sail and will be damaged - guy it out every time, and take it in before a squall rather than after.

Can I leave it out in rain?
