The case for a hard-shell rooftop tent is simple and you feel it every evening. There is no cover to unzip and stow, no fabric to fold, and nothing to clip. You undo the latches and 304 stainless gas struts lift the shell open on their own – roughly a minute from parking to a made bed, with the mattress already inside.
The shell is aluminium honeycomb, which is the good version of a hard shell. Honeycomb panels give great stiffness for very little weight, and weight is the number that decides whether a tent works on your rack at all. It closes flat and low, so between camps the vehicle keeps most of its height, its wind noise and its fuel consumption.
The tent body is 280 g polycotton ripstop canvas rated to 2,000 mm, with a 420D ripstop polyoxford fly rated to 3,000 mm over it. Canvas rather than pure synthetic matters on the Tanzanian coast: it breathes, so a humid night does not end with water running down the inside walls. A high-density sponge mattress is fitted, and an aluminium telescopic ladder extends to 2.3 m.
It sleeps two, which suits a couple or one person with room to spare. Sleeping on the roof puts you above insects, above water running through a camp site, in the breeze on a hot night, and lets you pitch on ground no normal tent would work on.
