About this product

Bike Protect is what you spray on after washing and drying, and it is the step most riders skip. It is a water-dispersing liquid with a very high oil content, and its job is to drive moisture out of everything the wash put water into – bolt heads, cable entries, the chain, pivot points – and leave a thin protective film behind.

That film does two things. It inhibits corrosion, which near the Indian Ocean is the difference between a drivetrain lasting years and lasting one season. And it stops dirt adhering, so the next wash takes half the time and the bike stays presentable between them.

One use worth knowing: spray it onto the chain to drive water out before you apply chain lube. Lube laid over a damp chain never bonds properly.

The film is not sticky and leaves a clean shine on the frame, drivetrain, metal parts and paintwork. Muc-Off are explicit about one limit, and it matters – do not apply it to tyre treads or braking surfaces. An oil film on a rim brake track or a disc rotor removes your braking.

When do I use it?

After washing and drying the bike, before lubricating the chain. Spray it over the frame and drivetrain, let it disperse the remaining moisture, then apply chain lube.

Can I spray it on the brakes?

No. Muc-Off are explicit: keep it off tyre treads and braking surfaces. An oil film on a rim brake track or a disc rotor will remove your braking, and a contaminated disc pad has to be replaced.

I ride near the coast. Does salt air matter?

It does. Salt-laden air off the Indian Ocean accelerates corrosion on chains, cassettes, cables and bolts far faster than inland. Rinse the bike after a beach or Kigamboni ride, dry it, and re-lube - that single habit does more for drivetrain life here than any upgrade.

Why does drying the bike matter so much here?

Because of the salt and the humidity. Water left standing in bolt heads, on the chain and around the cassette starts corrosion quickly on the coast. Dry the bike, then lubricate - ten minutes that adds years to a drivetrain.

Does it replace chain lube?

No. It drives moisture out and protects surfaces, but it is not a lubricant for the inside of a chain link. Use it before lube, not instead of it.

How often?

After every wash. It takes under a minute and it is the cheapest corrosion protection a bike near the coast can get.

How should I store it in this climate?

Keep it out of direct sun and away from a hot car boot. Aerosols and solvent-based products do not enjoy sitting at 40 degrees C, and a cupboard indoors is fine. Close the cap properly - humidity on the coast gets into anything left open.
