Highlights

The peg you replace the bundled ones with

Tents ship with soft steel wire pegs. These are what you buy instead.

7001 aluminium alloy

Hard and bend-resistant, and it does not rust the way the wire pegs in a tent bag do.

14 g each

Light enough that a full set of eight adds barely 110 g to a pack.

Hook top

The bent head catches a guy line or a tent loop and holds it without tying off.

Set of eight

Enough for the four corners and four guys of a small tent, in mixed colours.

Product description

About this product

The pegs that come in a tent bag are usually plain steel wire. They bend on the first stony pitch, rust in a season on the coast, and disappear into the grass because they are the colour of dirt. These are the standard upgrade: 18 cm of 7001 aluminium alloy with a hooked head, supplied eight to a pack in green, blue and red.

7001 is the same alloy family used for tent poles. It resists bending and corrosion, and at 14 g a peg you can carry a full set without noticing it.

Key Features

  • 7001 aluminium alloy, hard and bend-resistant
  • 18 cm long, 5 mm diameter
  • Hooked top for guy lines and tent loops
  • 14 g per peg
  • Eight per pack, colours supplied at random

Who It Suits

Backpackers and anyone replacing the pegs a tent came with. They hold well in grass, soil and firm murram. For loose beach sand or very soft ground, a wider V-section or a long iron nail will hold better.

Questions

Good to know

Can I choose the colour?

No. The pack is supplied in a random mix of green, blue and red. The bright anodising is there so you find them in the grass at pack-up, which matters more than the shade.

Will they hold in beach sand?

Not well. A 5 mm round peg has very little surface area in loose sand. For Kigamboni, Bagamoyo or any beach pitch use a V-section aluminium stake or a long iron ground nail instead.

Can I hammer them with a rock?

You can, but hit the shaft just below the hook rather than the hook itself, and use a mallet if you have one. A rock on the hook will eventually flatten it.

How do I get them out of hard ground?

Hook a guy line or another peg through the head and pull straight up. Never lever them sideways, which is how aluminium pegs bend.

Do they rust?

Aluminium does not rust. It can pick up a dull grey oxide film, which is harmless. That is the main reason to carry these instead of the steel wire pegs from a tent bag.

Are eight enough for my tent?

Eight covers the corners and guy points of a small two or three person tent. A family tent or a canopy usually wants twelve to sixteen, so buy two packs.

How do I look after them on the coast?

Rinse the salt off with fresh water and dry them before they go back in the bag. Salt sitting on aluminium in a closed bag will stain it.

What if one bends?

A gentle bend can be straightened by hand or underfoot. Once the shaft has a sharp kink in it, retire that peg, because it will fold at the same point every time.
