Highlights

A V holds where a round peg pulls out

The profile is the whole point: three times the soil contact of a pin the same weight.

V-section profile

The folded shape bites into soft soil and grass instead of spinning in its own hole.

7001 aluminium alloy

Hard, bend-resistant and corrosion-resistant, at 17 g a stake.

20 cm of bite

Long enough for grass, soil and light sand where a short peg gives up.

Rope loop at the head

Takes a guy line directly, and gives you something to pull against at strike.

Product description

About this product

Shaped Aluminum Ground Nails – in stock at 361 Degrees Adventure in Tanzania.

A round peg holds by friction along a thin shaft. Push it into soft ground and it turns into a pin in a sleeve of loose soil, and the first strong gust pulls it out. A V-section stake works differently: the folded profile presses against a much wider face of soil, and it cannot rotate in its own hole.

These are 20 cm of 7001 aluminium alloy, the same alloy family as a good tent pole, at 17 g a stake. The head carries a groove for the guy line and a hole for a cord you can pull on to get them out again.

  • 7001 aluminium alloy, hard and corrosion resistant

Questions

Good to know

How much better is a V-section than a round peg?

Noticeably, in anything soft. The V presents a much wider face to the soil and cannot spin in its hole, which is how round pegs work loose overnight. On hard stony ground the difference narrows, because there a thin round peg often goes in where a V will not.

Will they work on a beach?

On firm damp sand near the water line, yes. In dry loose sand above the high-tide mark nothing this size holds well. Bury a stake sideways as a deadman, or weight the guy line with a sandbag.

Can I hammer them in?

Yes, with a mallet or a smooth stone on the head. Do not hit the folded edge, and stop if the stake starts to twist, which means you have hit a root or a rock.

How do I pull them out?

Thread a short cord through the hole in the head and pull straight up. Pulling on the guy line itself will fray it, and levering sideways will bend the profile.

Do they rust in coastal air?

No, they are aluminium. Rinse the salt off and dry them anyway, because salt left in the groove will dull the finish.

Are eight enough?

Eight suits a small tent or a basic tarp pitch. A canopy, a family tent or anything you guy out properly will want sixteen.

Can I use them on murram or hardpan?

On firm murram they go in, though you will want a mallet. On true hardpan or rocky ground use a steel peg and keep these for softer pitches.

What colour do they come in?

Silver and black are the two finishes in circulation. Ask us which we have in stock before you order a matched set.
