Product description

About this product

No battery, no tree, no power. Just a foot pump.

Gravity showers need something to hang from and give you whatever dribble the height allows. Electric ones need charging. This one is pressurised by standing on the built-in foot pump a few times, which means it works on a beach with no trees, in a vehicle park, or anywhere else you happen to be.

Eleven litres is enough for two decent rinses or one unhurried shower. The trigger nozzle lets you stop the flow between soaping and rinsing, which is what actually makes the water go far.

It rolls down to about the size of a small drybag and weighs under a kilogram empty. There is nothing electrical in it to fail.

Questions

Good to know

How does it build pressure without power?

There is a foot pump built into the base. You stand on it and pump a few times, which pressurises the air above the water and pushes it out of the hose. When the flow weakens, a few more pumps restore it. It is the same principle as a garden sprayer.

How long does 11 litres last?

Long enough for one unhurried shower or two quick rinses, if you use the trigger to stop the flow while soaping. Running it continuously it goes considerably faster, as with any shower.

Does it heat the water?

No. Fill it with warm water if you want a warm shower, or leave it in the sun for an hour or two first, which in Tanzania works well. For a bag designed around solar heating, look at the Dawn Bath solar shower instead.

How does this compare to the vehicle-mounted shower?

Completely different tools. That one is a powered pump that draws from any container and delivers 3.6 litres a minute on a six-metre hose. This one holds its own 11 litres, needs no power at all, weighs a kilogram and costs a fraction. If you have a vehicle and the budget, the powered one is a better shower. If you want something that always works, this is it.

Can I use it for anything other than showering?

It is genuinely useful for rinsing sandy feet, dogs, fishing gear and muddy boots before they go in the car, which for many buyers is the main use. Anything you would want a couple of litres of controlled water for.

How do I look after it?

Empty and dry it before storing, because water left in a PVC barrel goes stale and stains. Do not leave it fully pressurised for long periods. Keep it out of prolonged direct sun when not in use, since UV hardens PVC over time.
