A different class of knife entirely.

Extrema Ratio make knives in Italy for military and professional use, and the Contact C is built to that standard rather than to a retail price point. The difference shows in three places.

The steel. Bohler N690 is an Austrian stainless with cobalt, hardened here to 58 HRC. It holds an edge far longer than the 420-series steels used in most camp knives, while still resisting corrosion well enough for coastal use.

The spine. Six point three millimetres. That is roughly twice the thickness of a typical camp knife, and it is what lets the blade take lateral load without any concern. The full-length fuller keeps the weight sensible at 273 grams despite the mass of steel.

The sheath. Injection-moulded shock-resistant nylon, MOLLE compatible, with an anti-rattle dampening system so the knife is silent when you move. Retention is two-stage: a twin-button safety loop plus a reversible trigger-lever release that can be set up for either hand.

The handle is Forprene on a threaded tang, with a single-branch handguard. The finish is MIL-C-13924 black oxide, stone washed.

Good to know

Is N690 worth the difference over a 420-series steel?

Yes, and it is the main thing you are paying for. N690 holds a working edge several times longer than 420HC, so you sharpen far less often. It still contains enough chromium to resist corrosion properly. The trade is that when it does need sharpening it takes more work, and a cheap stone will struggle.

Why is the blade so thick?

Because it is built for load rather than slicing. At 6.3 mm the blade will take prying and lateral force that would snap a thinner knife. The cost is that it is not an ideal food or carving knife: a thick spine wedges rather than slices. This is a hard-use tool, and if you mostly want to prepare food at camp, a thinner knife will serve you better.

What does the anti-rattle sheath actually do?

Dampens the knife inside the moulded sheath so it does not click or knock as you move. It matters for hunting and professional use, where noise gives you away, and it is the sort of detail that separates a military-specification sheath from a retail one.

Can I set the sheath up for left hand?

Yes. The trigger-lever second-stage retention is reversible and ambidextrous, and the sheath is MOLLE compatible so it mounts in a range of positions and orientations.

There are different dimensions online for this knife. Which are right?

We have published the Italian factory figures: 258 mm overall, 128 mm blade, 6.3 mm thick, 273 g. Extrema Ratio own US site prints materially smaller numbers, and their factory table mismatches its own millimetre and inch columns. The Italian figures are corroborated by an authorised UK dealer, so those are what we publish.

Is it legal to carry here?

This is a substantial fixed-blade knife and it looks like one. Carried with your kit, in a vehicle or in the bush, it is a tool. Carried on your person in town it will be treated very differently, and we would not recommend it. Keep it packed in transit.

How do I look after it?

Extrema Ratio are specific: rinse with fresh water after use, dry thoroughly and lubricate the metal components, particularly after saltwater or humid exposure. N690 resists rust but the black oxide finish is a coating, not armour. Do not store it in a damp sheath.
