Product description

About this product

A real shower at camp, and a hose for the vehicle afterwards.

This is the powered version, not a bag you hang in a tree. Drop the inlet hose into any bucket, jerry can or stream, and the pump delivers a proper pressurised spray at up to 3.6 litres a minute. The six-metre outlet hose means the unit can sit by the water while you stand well away from it.

Three flow settings let you trade pressure against duration. On full it runs 50 to 70 minutes; on the water-saving setting up to two hours, which at 2.4 litres a minute is still a usable shower and makes a 20 litre container go a long way.

The second nozzle turns it into a vehicle wash, which is the part that earns its keep on a dusty road trip. Same pump, same hoses.

It charges from the mains in 5 to 7 hours, or from the 12V car socket in 2 to 3 — and it can run while plugged into the car, so on a long trip the battery stops being the limit.

Questions

Good to know

Where does the water come from?

Wherever you put the inlet hose. A bucket, a jerry can, a drum, a stream or the sea. There is no tank in the unit itself, which is why it is far more useful than a fixed-capacity shower bag: your capacity is whatever container you have.

How much water does a shower use?

On the water-saving setting at 2.4 litres a minute, a brisk three-minute shower is about 7 litres, so a 20 litre jerry can gives roughly three showers. On full flow it is more like 11 litres for the same three minutes. The saving setting is genuinely usable, not a token mode.

Will it run flat mid-shower?

Not on one shower. Fifty minutes at full flow is a lot of showering. On a long trip, run it from the 12V car lead, which both powers it and charges it, and the battery stops being a consideration at all.

Does it heat the water?

No. It is a pump, not a heater. The water comes out at whatever temperature it went in. In Tanzania that is rarely a problem, and a black jerry can left in the sun for the afternoon solves it entirely.

Can it really wash a car?

With the car-wash nozzle, yes, for rinsing dust, mud and salt. It is not a high-pressure washer and will not strip baked-on dirt, but after a dusty drive or a day at the beach it does exactly what you want.

Can I put it in the sea?

The inlet hose, yes, and rinsing salt off with seawater is not much use so you would only be pumping to clean gear. Rinse the pump through with fresh water afterwards, because salt left in a pump is what kills it.

How do I look after it?

Run clean water through it after anything silty or salty, since grit in the impeller is the usual failure. Store it dry with the hoses coiled loosely. Keep the battery topped up rather than leaving it flat for months, and charge it between 0 and 40 C.
