About this product

The EDC31 is the narrow one. Twenty-three millimetres across the head, 113 mm long, 100 g, and it still throws a beam 380 metres and puts out 3,500 lumens at the top. That comes from a single nine-core UHi 20 MAX LED, which is the LED Nitecore builds its high-performance lights around.

Four brightness levels cycle with the switch, and two extra modes sit beside them: SEARCH for maximum reach and LUMIN SHIELD for a wide close-in wall of light. The rapid lock switch gives half and full lockout so it stays off in a bag.

The 3,800 mAh battery is built in and charges over USB-C. At the lowest level it runs for 57 hours, which covers several nights of ordinary use between charges.

Good to know

How is this different from the EDC23?

The EDC31 is round and narrow rather than flat, throws further (380 m against 280 m), is properly submersible at IP68, and has a bigger battery. The EDC23 has the OLED screen and the flatter pocket shape. Reach and sealing against carry comfort.

Can it really go under water?

IP68 at 2 metres means a dropped light in a boat or a bucket is recoverable, and rain is a non-event. Rinse it in fresh water afterwards if it went into the sea, and check the O-ring is clean before you close it up.

What are SEARCH and LUMIN SHIELD for?

SEARCH pushes everything into the spot for maximum distance, which is what you want across a field or a dark stretch of water. LUMIN SHIELD floods close in, which is better for working on something a metre away without blinding yourself.

Is the battery replaceable?

No, the 3,800 mAh cell is built in and charges through the USB-C port. That is what keeps the body this narrow.

How does it handle Dar humidity and salt air?

The hard-anodised aluminium and IP68 sealing are the right combination for the coast. Keep the charge port dry, rinse salt off, and it will not corrode the way a cheap painted torch does.

How long does a charge take?

A few hours from flat on a normal 5V USB source. Any phone charger, power bank or solar panel with a USB port will do it.

What runtime should I actually expect?

57 hours is the lowest level. On a mid level expect several hours of genuinely useful light, and on turbo a few minutes before temperature regulation steps it down. That pattern is true of every light in this class.
